Ukrainian soldiers in Mariupol refuse to surrender

In the besieged city of Mariupol, Ukrainian soldiers on Sunday rejected a Russian ultimatum to surrender or face elimination. Russia captured most of the strategically located port city, but some Ukrainian fighters refused to lay down their arms. During an interview with CNNUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said no one knows how many people died in Mariupol.

President Volodymyr Zelensky“Nobody knows how many people died among the civilian population. If anyone gives you a number, it would be a complete lie. Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated. Several thousands, tens of thousands have been forced to evacuate towards the Russian Federation, and we do not know where they are. They left no documentary trace. And among them are several thousand children. We want to know what happened to them, if they are in good health. Unfortunately, there is simply no information about it.

On Sunday, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said Russian President Vladimir Putin believed he was winning the war. Nehammer met Putin in Moscow last week. During the meeting, Putin defended his invasion of Ukraine, saying it was necessary for Russia’s security.
