Ukrainian visiting Glasgow hoping to raise money or a bulletproof vest to help Ukraine

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – It has been more than a month since Russian forces invaded Ukraine and since then many continue to fight for their country at the risk of their lives every day.

Alex Misiats, a math professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, is currently visiting Glasgow Kentucky, a city he calls his second home. Since Misiats still has family and friends in Ukraine, he hopes to raise funds to help send body armor to those in need.

“I’m trying to be helpful as much as possible while being here as someone from Ukraine whose mother is in the bomb shelter right now, I’m trying to get as much protection for the defenders of Ukraine,” said Misiats.

“We have an organization in Richmond called Lift Up Ukraine, while the lawyers are working on it, so we will collect as many vests as we can and then get the permit for them and have them shipped to Ukraine. In the meantime, even though it may take weeks or even months, I am collecting money to buy vests in Germany,” he explained.

Misiats adds that it has been nice to see the support Ukraine receives from all over the world.

“The amount of support Ukraine is receiving from the world is unprecedented. It definitely exceeded anyone’s expectations, including the invaders, including us as Ukrainians. We didn’t expect to see the Ukrainian flag in the middle of every small town, including Bowling Green, there are Ukrainian flags flying above restaurants in Glasgow,” he adds.

He is also full of hope for the future of his country.

“I’m pretty sure that when Ukraine wins, Ukraine will be much stronger, Ukraine will be a different country, all the ruins will be rebuilt, and it will be rebuilt, it will be even better than what it was. was,” says Misiats.

Misiats says he hopes to buy the first part of vests in Germany next week.

“All I care about is the lives of our heroic defenders and as many lives as I can save by being here, providing them with so little protection, giving them the best, that’s what matters.” , he adds.

Misiats says buying the body armor from Germany will help with shipping, as those in Ukraine can have them shipped overnight.
