With San Antonio’s restaurant and bar scene constantly buzzing, local foodies should keep an eye out for details on the opening of the upscale yet traditional ceviche bar in Southtown soon. Although locals most likely know Mexican well cevichethe next Leche de Tigre will bring a dose of authentic peruvian cuisine in Saint Antoine.
Tiger Leche is currently under construction at 318 E. Cevallos St., San Antonio, TX 78204, with construction expected to be completed in November. Restaurant owner Emil Oliva hopes to welcome diners to the small, renovated space soon after.
“Right now we’re looking at opening in late November, early December,” he says.
Oliva teased local foodies with photos and videos of dishes expected at Leche de Tigre, a name that pays homage to the citrus-based sauce commonly used in Peruvian ceviche, which is traditionally rawer than Mexican ceviche. Oliva says he looks forward to delivering an authentic Peruvian experience, one that diners might have if they were in a ceviche bar in Lima, Peru.
” I lived [in San Antonio] for 10 years and I’ve never really seen anyone do it like that,” he says, adding that other small Peruvian dishes and favorites will also be served. “It’s going to be a challenge for us to introduce something new to the city.”
Oliva, who has lived in Lima for eight years and is half-Peruvian through her father, says Leche de Tigre will have two indoor bars, a pisco bar with liquor that seats about four people, as well as a cocktail bar. ceviche can accommodate about 12 people. Here, he says, diners can learn more about the dish, which Oliva says is meant to be enjoyed with a beer or cocktail.
“We want people to be able to sit at the ceviche bar and watch our chefs,” he says, hoping diners will join in the experience so they learn more about the cooking.
Guests will also be able to enjoy the scenery outside, as the renovations will take full advantage of the space, with tables on the front patio, indoor seating, and additional seating in the restaurant’s backyard.
“We ultimately chose Southtown because of the general vibe,” he says, adding that the neighborhood is a hub for hot new restaurants and bars. “We are very lucky to be located on East Ceballos right in front of Blue Star.”
