USFL Week 3: Birmingham Stallions survive New Orleans Breakers

Week 3 of USFL the season continued on Saturday with a highly anticipated battle between the Birmingham Stallions and the New Orleans thugsas both teams battled to maintain their perfect records.

Both teams went into Saturday’s show unbeaten, but it was the stallions that emerged victorious.

Here are the best moments between Birmingham and NOLA:

Moving

New Orleans QB Kyle Sloter connected with tight end Sal Cannella for an 18-yard gain to move downfield breakdowns.

What started as a promising drive for New Orleans early in the first frame ended in a turnover for the Breakers, as Sloter fumbled the ball over the goal line, and it was picked up by DeMarquis Gates from Birmingham to the Stallions 1-yard line.

New Orleans enters the chat

Sloter found a rhythm with Breakers catcher Johnnie Dixon, who landed a clutch catch in traffic to put New Orleans in scoring position late in the second period.

Sloter capped the 13-play, 85-yard run with a TD pass to Dixon to put the Breakers on the board before the break. It was a one-point game, 7-6, after a missed extra point.

Stallions QB Smith rushed for 31 yards in the final moments of the second frame, setting up Birmingham for a short field goal to extend their lead before the break, 10-6.

The breakers parade

The Breakers capped a massive 17-play, 77-yard drive that lasted nearly nine minutes with a touchdown on their first drive of the second half to take their first lead of the game, 13-10.

It was obvious that the Sloter-Dixon connection continued to heat up as the game progressed.

The stallions answer

Birmingham fought back with an eight-minute, 15-game drive to open the final frame, but the Stallions were unable to seal the deal and knocked the ball down in the downs.

Birmingham QB Smith again connected with WR Victor Bolden, but this time he ended with six points.

Just like that, the Stallions were leading 17-13 midway through the fourth quarter.

Chaos ensues

Things got chaotic on the next ride.

Sloter was sacked in the end zone and lost the ball, which was recovered by New Orleans’ OL Kai Absheer, who then fumbled the ball again in the end zone.

He was picked up by Birmingham’s Scooby Wright for a touchdown, which was overturned and ruled a safety after a stand review, making it 19-13.

New Orleans bounced back on the next drive, as DE Nigel Chavis blocked the Stallions punt.

The Breakers were unable to capitalize on the big play, however, as New Orleans failed to move the ball downfield before missing a field goal to close out the drive.

Sloter was picked on New Orleans’ own 33-yard line as the two-minute warning approached.

The Stallions turned that into three points after a quick field goal, good for a 22-13 advantage, and things ended there.
