Kyiv (WJW/AP) – A heartwarming video circulates of a dog who found his owner after their separation during violence near Kyiv.

Volunteers with a fighting battalion for Ukraine found the dog, Nessie, during Bucha’s recapture. Nessie found her owner in the parking lot of a supermarket in Kyiv.

“As long as some treat people like animals, we are fighting for the lives of not just humans but all animals,” the battalion said in a statement.

Bucha is a town just outside of Kyiv where graphic evidence of murders and torture has emerged after the withdrawal of Russian forces.

Ukraine recaptured Bucha from Russia last week.

Scenes that have emerged from Bucha, Irpin and other Ukrainian towns liberated by Ukrainian forces have led to war crimes charges and calls for tougher sanctions against Russia.

On Wednesday, the United States announced that it would crack down, with sanctions targeting the two adult daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The White House also said it was toughening penalties on Russian banks in retaliation for “war crimes” in Ukraine.

President Joe Biden has called the latest round of sanctions “devastating”.

“I have made it clear that Russia will pay a severe and immediate price for its atrocities in Bucha,” Biden said in a tweet.

Biden was expected to sign an executive order that would bar Americans from further investment in Russia, wherever they live. The US Treasury Department is preparing new sanctions against large Russian state-owned companies, according to the White House.
