When does the Edinburgh Fringe start? 2022 dates, program and how to get tickets

The Fringe is back in the capital! After missing a full festival due to the pandemic, Edinburgh prepares to welcome the world back.

Dating from 1947, fringe has been entertaining us for decades while celebrating the best in art and culture.

For three action-packed weeks, Edinburgh will welcome tourists, locals, artists and producers from around the world to present new shows, delight audiences and discover bright new talent.

Here’s when the Fringe kicks off, how to access the 2022 schedule, and how to get your tickets.

When does the Edinburgh Festival Fringe start? date 2022

The Fringe takes place in Edinburgh for three weeks in August.

It officially kicks off on Friday August 5 and will run until Monday August 29, 2022.

This year, the Fringe Festival celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Edinburgh Fringe Schedule 2022

As in previous years, festival-goers will be able to enjoy a jam-packed program of musicals along with everything else.

When planning your Fringe visit, you can search for shows by category to make it easier to find the one that’s right for you.

Categories include:

  • Cabaret and varieties

  • Dance, physical theater and circus
  • Events
  • Exhibitions
  • Music
  • Musicals and opera
  • spoken word
  • Theater

This year, you will also be able to enjoy face-to-face and online shows that you can watch via the Edinburgh Fringe website.

There is also an official paper program which shows all the events taking place during the three weeks.

Although the special edition, created for the 75th anniversary, is completely sold out, you can still buy a standard copy here.

Alternatively, you can pick it up from the Fringe store or various locations around the UK which you can find on the Fringe website.

Edinburgh Fringe Street Events 2022

Whether you’re a Fringe veteran or a newbie, you’ll likely have heard about the transformation of the capital’s historic streets during the festival.

The festival’s street events are proudly open, which means the organizers try to remove as many barriers as possible for performers and audiences.

The Fringe also does not charge artists a fee to participate and the event is free to the public, although donations to artists are encouraged.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival Tickets 2022

There are several ways festival-goers can book tickets to see Fringe shows on their to-do list.

You can book shows online at any time by browsing the listings on the website.

Alternatively, you can telephone the Box Office during its opening hours on +44 (0)131 226 0000.

Visitors can also book tickets at the box office (next to the Fringe Shop) in person.

The opening hours of the ticket office are as follows:

  • June 20 – July 17 (Monday – Friday) 10:00 – 18:00
  • 18 – 31 July (Monday – Saturday) 10:00 – 18:00
  • 01 – 29 August (daily) 10:00 – 18:00

The festival fun doesn’t stop there with bargains to be had at the Half Price Hut at the Fringe Box Office, where you can find same-day Fringe deals.

All Fringe tickets are electronic tickets, so there is no need to pick up physical tickets this year.

Once you have booked your tickets, you will receive a confirmation email containing a QR code that acts as your ticket.
