As things get frosty throughout November, you can’t be faulted for seeking out some sunshine.

Catch some golden rays on a white sand beach somewhere far, far away? It sounds like music to our ears.

An action-packed adventure route filled with bright sunshine would also be a dream come true.

With journey now more open than it has been for some time, it’s not entirely impossible to think that a winter getaway in the November sun might be on the cards.

So where’s the hottest and best weather-friendly destinations for this chilly month?

Let’s take a look at some options around the world.

Where is it hot in November?

Mauritius

Temperature: 29°C
Hours of sunshine: Eight
Flight time: 12 hours, 55 minutes

In the Indian Ocean, you will find the East African country Mauritius – up there with the Seychelles and the Maldives as one of the most famous and beautiful island destinations in the world.

Sparkling beaches, reefs to snorkel and oceans to swim in make Mauritius a great option for those who prefer to sunbathe all day. The evenings are warm at 20°C, so you won’t need to wrap up too much to enjoy the night.

For the active traveller, Mauritius also has a lot to offer. Here you can do just about every water sport under the sun, hike through rainforests, climb mountains, and spot wildlife.

It can be expensive, but here how to see mauritius without breaking the bank.

Madeira

Temperature: 21°C
Sunshine hours: 10 hours
Flight time: Three hours, 50 minutes

Autonomous region of Portugal, you will find Madeira is significantly warmer in November than most of Europe – as it is located just off the northern coast of Africa.

The weather is not scorching – a beautiful 21°C as the average high, cooling at night towards the 13°C mark. But for the shorter flight time and number of options for your trip, you really can’t go wrong.

Funchal, the capital, is an original city, while the north of the island is the place to go for wild adventures full of nature. Wherever you go, expect to see the coast and drink lots of wine (there are lots of vineyards).

South Africa

Temperature: 23°C°C
Hours of sunshine: 12 hours
Flight time:

November is usually a good time to visit South Africa.

It’s the very start of summer, with (mostly) clear weather, quiet beaches and fewer tourists all clamoring to go on safari before the high season begins.

Your options for where to go in South Africa are vast. There is Cape Town, which has good weather in November, and then the great national parks for safari: Kruger National Park being perhaps the best known.

You can go off the beaten track to the North Cape or the eastern region of KwaZulu-Natal, which is also an ideal destination for wildlife lovers.

You will also find the city of Durban here, known for its Golden Mile beach.

Cyprus

Temperature: 22ºC
Hours of sunshine: 10 hours
Flight time: Four hours, 30 minutes

Generally a hot summer destination for us Brits (even sometimes reaching 40°C), Cyprus is a great choice for winter sun with minimal flight time.

Temperatures can reach around 22°C on average, maybe a little higher if you’re lucky.

The hugely popular Paphos will also be warm in November, so you can spend the whole day lounging on the sun loungers or on the beautiful beaches – before a slightly cooler evening begins.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Temperature: 25ºC
Flight time: 17 hours

Sunny South America couldn’t be farther from cold, wet England – and Argentina now reopens to vaccinated travelers who meet their long entry requirements.

You will have to pay for this though, with a flight with a layover of at least 17 hours, unless you can catch the only direct flight from the UK to Buenos Aires from London Heathrow.

Hopefully it will be worth it. The bustling capital is full of interesting neighborhoods, art museums and remarkable architecture, all of which are best enjoyed in good weather. Of course, it could also be your gateway to a much longer and more extensive journey.

The capital of Malta is the city of Valletta (Photo: Getty)

Malta

Temperature: 21ºC
Hours of sunshine: 10 hours
Flight time: Three hours, 10 minutes

The easiest flight time on our list belongs to the Mediterranean gem Malta.

At this time of year the sea is still quite warm, so get to this beach as soon as possible – consider the coastal towns of Sliema and St Julian’s for that resort feel.

Don’t skip Malta’s other islands, though: Gozo and little Cosimo. And if you can, spend a few days in the beautiful capital city of Valletta, which has been a filming location for everything from Game Of Thrones to the new Jurassic World.

Temperature: 28ºC
Hours of sunshine: Eight hours
Flight time: Six o’clock

Cape Verde is a small archipelago country in Africa – and is the perfect destination for winter sun. With a gorgeous average high temperature, you’ll feel like you’re in the height of the British summer.

The resort town of Boa Vista is popular, while the offshore island of Sal is known for its history in the salt trade, kitesurfing opportunities and being home to many sea turtles.

Meanwhile, the capital, Praia, is on the largest island, Santiago. It is home to two well-known beaches: Praínha and Quebra Canela – but it’s not all sea and sand.

Expect to see bustling cities, mountains, and the UNESCO-listed old capital Cidade Velha (the oldest part of Santiago Island) on your trip, too.

Tenerife

Temperature: 21°C
Hours of sunshine: Seven hours
Flight time: Four hours, 30 minutes

The Canary Islands are popular as a sunny winter destination – so the inclusion of Tenerife on this list comes as no surprise.

Home to myriad yellow-sand beaches (like La Tejita, great for windsurfing), the Thai-inspired water park Siam, Spain’s highest peak (Mount Teide) and plenty of hikes in the national park from the Teide, you will certainly not be bored on a trip to Tenerife.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the main town on the island, and here you’ll find the Mercado de Nuestra Senora de Africa, a traditional local food market dating back to the 1940s.

And for November 2022 (and beyond)…

If 2021 still feels a bit uncertain, here are some great destinations you can consider for next year.

It’s time to save!

Laos

Temperature: 25°C
Hours of sunshine: Six
Flight time: 11:00

This Southeast Asian country has a lot to offer – and is particularly sunny and rainless towards the end of the year.

Unfortunately travel restrictions mean few Britons can get visas and a 14-day quarantine is still in place – so possibly one for 2022 or beyond.

Opt for the capital Vientiane, or the popular city of Luang Prabang. Expect temples to explore, bridges, markets, architecture, great food and views of the famous Mekong River.

However, Laos is landlocked – so no beaches here. If you’re looking for beaches and islands, you might want to consider skipping (or combining your trip with) neighboring countries Vietnam and Cambodia – also good weather picks for November.

Know this before you go

While travel has recently opened up and its seems as Covid travel restrictions are a thing of the past – keep in mind things can change at any time.

All destinations on this list are visitable at the time of writing, but you should be aware that countries may be added to a ‘red list’ or ‘prohibited list’ at short notice. If a country turns red when you are already there, you will be subject to new quarantine rules.

Individual countries could also change whether or not they are willing to allow Brits – so that’s worth bearing in mind as well. It’s wise to keep a close eye on the country’s individual entry requirements and ensure you have top-tier travel insurance for your trip.
