Why Grayson McCall is transferred from Coastal Carolina after playing in the Birmingham Bowl

Between NFL draft declarations, an ever-changing carousel of coaches, and the constant turnover of the transfer gate, it’s officially been a silly season in college football.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. In the age of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) agreements, players finally have the opportunity to capitalize on their skills.

That doesn’t make the period any less chaotic. Many players have opted out of bowling games over the past few weeks in hopes of staying healthy and weighing their options with clarity.

From NFL prospects like Will Levis, Michael Mayer and Anthony Richardson, to the many Power 5 players heading to the portal, there’s been a lot of roster upheaval.

One player who is staying put, at least for this week, is Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall.

McCall has already announced his intention to leave Coastal at the end of the season. But he will leave Chanticleers fans with a lasting memory before he leaves: McCall is set to start the team’s duel with East Carolina at the Birmingham Bowl on Tuesday.

Here’s what you need to know about McCall’s decision to leave the Chanticleers, as well as his potential suitors.

Why is Grayson McCall being transferred?

During his four-year tenure at Brooks Stadium, McCall set Coastal Carolina’s record books on fire. He had 78 touchdowns for just eight interceptions while propelling the Chanticleers to national prominence.

Coastal has a chance of earning its third straight 10-win season, a particularly impressive achievement considering the Chanticleers only returned to Division I FBS status in 2017.

McCall’s play attracted many admirers. Given the current dynamic in college football, his availability has some of the nation’s top schools swooning as they pursue his signing.

McCall announced on December 12 that he intended to leave Coastal to “explore other opportunities”.

Which schools are trying to sign Grayson McCall?

The announcement sent the college football world into a frenzy. A host of teams, including Auburn, Florida and Liberty – and his new coach, former Coastal Carolina boss Jamey Chadwell – are said to be interested. He has two years of eligibility left.

Why does Grayson McCall play in the Birmingham Bowl?

McCall has been attached to the Chanticleers program since being given the go-ahead to start in sophomore year. The partnership has proven extremely successful.

In his transfer statement, McCall said he wanted to “finish this [he] started” in teal and black.

The comment was unsurprising, given McCall’s affinity for academia. He showed it when he announced his intention to stay at Conway around this time last year.

“It was a fun move, but he meant it in a way because he loves this university,” Chanticleers offensive lineman Will McDonald told SN’s Bill Trocchi earlier this year. “I think that’s why he’s been so special and we’ve been so special for the past few years.”
