Woman books a night at Kyiv Airbnb to help her landlord

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Wisconsin woman found a creative way to donate to someone in Ukraine.

Kaye Kohlmann and her husband have booked a night at an Airbnb in Kyiv where they don’t plan to stay. The Janesville woman got the idea from a friend on Facebook.

“We just wanted to show our support somehow,” Kohlmann said Thursday. “Obviously there’s not much we can do from here, but we know they’re probably hurting, especially in this industry where people don’t come and hang around.”

Kohlmann opted for a two-bedroom apartment apartment donated by a man named Maksym. She said she had a brief exchange with the owner, who thanked her and wrote “we will win”.

In his profile, Maksym calls himself a native of the Ukrainian capital and a world traveler.

“I have traveled a lot myself and visited almost 100 countries around the world, that’s why I know how important comfort is in a foreign country or city,” he says.

A spokeswoman told WBBM Newsradio that Airbnb is temporarily waiving guest and host fees for Ukrainian bookings.

The company encourages people to provide housing for refugees by either hosting them directly or making donations. Airbnb has a page to help you.
