You can rent the old house of Charles Schulz in the bay area

In 1976, Eric Rogers’ grandfather saw an ad for a “celebrity house for sale” in the San Francisco Chronicle. He was intrigued by the announcement and immediately took the time to check out the property; Celebrity appeal aside, the Sevastopol house had amenities he had never seen before.

There was a four hole golf course. There was a pool and a baseball field. And among acres of lush redwoods stood a little cabin tucked away to one side.

Rogers’ grandfather quickly learned that the property had once housed famous designer Charles M. Schulz and his family. This tiny studio on the property was where the cartoonist spent his days drawing one of America’s most beloved comics, Peanuts.

The property extended over nearly 30 hectares. While Rogers’ grandfather was interested, his wife said no. The couple made a compromise and asked the estate agent if the land could be divided, and that’s how the family ended up with 10 acres of the property, including the drawing studio.

Today, 45 years later, the land is still in the family and you can rent it on Airbnb.

The small chalet has been renovated into a one bedroom, one and a half bathroom house with a living room with a stone fireplace and a modern kitchen. Rogers said the original cabin was rather dark, so the only major renovations the family has done over the years have been adding windows and skylights to bring in natural light and take advantage of the outdoor landscape. The rest they left as a tribute to its most famous resident, even outfitting the bedroom that was once the living room with historic photos of Schulz drawing in the house.

There’s also a large deck for enjoying the surrounding nature, which includes plenty of wild turkeys that roam around and sometimes compete for territory with local peacocks, Rogers said. There is also a small fish pond, and it is not uncommon to see deer walking there.

Most of the people renting the space are couples looking to get away for the weekend, often to celebrate an important anniversary or anniversary, Rogers told SFGATE. The location seems isolated, but visitors are still only minutes from the city and all that Sonoma County has to offer.

Rogers takes care of the property with his father. When they made it a vacation rental in 2016, they decided to renovate the four-hole golf course that Schulz had built, which was now in poor condition. As they scoured the proliferation and quickly realized how big a project this would be, they began to find golf balls – some with very recognizable names.

“We were finding golf balls with names like Bob Hope and Robert Mitchum,” Rogers said. “Then one of the [Schulz’s] the sons told us they used to do a lot of charity tournaments and things there. We found one of Bing Crosby’s bullets. It was just cool.

A few visits from Schulz’s sons provided insight into much of the history surrounding the property, especially the way it was originally laid out. “It sounded like [Schulz’s kids] grew up in a children’s paradise, ”Rogers said. “[His sons] told me stories about going around the golf course on their dirt bikes and they had horses and animals.

It’s always been so magical for Rogers, who often visited growing up because it was his family’s second home. For decades, it was a place for family to come together. His grandfather wanted him to stay with the family, even though he has since passed away. The family always takes advantage of the home whenever they can; they just hosted her cousin’s wedding there last month.

“We’ve had all of our family weddings there, reunions and celebrations,” Rogers said. “He really has a place in our hearts, but at one point we realized that he was sitting idle so often that it seemed a shame not to share him with people.”
