Can a clerk legally prevent you from checking your receipt in Michigan?

It’s happened to all of us or we’ve all seen it happen to someone else. We are out shopping for food or clothes and a host or security guard at the entrance/exit stops you and asks if he can see your receipt.

This has happened to me many times before and I stopped and let them check my receipt to make sure anything in my cart or bag was also on the receipt. But I always wondered if a clerk could legally stop me and check my receipt? I did some research and here is what I was able to find.

To try and find an answer, I searched online and found an answer at Legal definitions.

Here’s what the website had to say about it being legal for a store clerk to stop you and check your receipt.

The short answer is no. At most retailers like walmart, an employee cannot force you to show them your receipt or allow them to search your bag. And make no mistake: when a greeter asks to verify your receipt, they’re actually asking for permission to search your luggage or seize your person.

It’s not always a good idea to do something even if you have the right to do so. In certain circumstances, store employees are justified in holding you until the police arrive. Known as shopkeeper privilege, the store clerk can stop you from leaving if they think you have shoplifted. In addition, you could be denied access to the premises or lose your membership card if you do not comply.

Despite this, it is useful to know your rights in these situations. Although nothing prevents a host from asking you to comply, your rights could be violated if they try to prevent you from leaving.
