In light of the Russian-Ukrainian war, many companies, especially those located nearby in Central Europe, have pledged to provide support in any way possible. We hope this list (updated regularly) can serve as a directory for those who have been directly affected by the ongoing war, as well as for people wondering how they can help.

local transport

Arrival Czech Republic offers free train travel on all its routes to anyone who can present a Ukrainian passport or national identity card.

BKK offers free public transport in Budapest to anyone who can present a Ukrainian passport or national identity card.

Deutsche Bahn offers free train travel throughout Germany to anyone who can present a Ukrainian passport or national identity card.

PLR offers free public transport in Prague to anyone who can present a Ukrainian passport or national identity card.

VAM offers free train travel throughout Hungary to anyone who can present a Ukrainian passport or national identity card.

ÖBB offers free train travel throughout Austria to anyone who can present a Ukrainian passport or national identity card.

Long distance transport

České dráhy offers free train travel throughout the Czech Republic to anyone who can present a Ukrainian passport or national identity card. The company also collaborates with the railway companies ZSSK (in Slovakia) and PKP (in Poland) to ensure that any Ukrainian refugee coming to the Czech Republic can do so as easily as possible and free of charge.

Finnair offers a 95% discount on one-way tickets for flights to Helsinki from five Central European cities. The discount can be redeemed throughout March on the company’s website, using the code “Ukraine95”.

FlixBus offers free intercity bus tickets from the Polish border towns of Przemyśl and Rzeszów. Requests should be made by email to [email protected]

Free now financially supports volunteer drivers who transport refugees from the Polish-Ukrainian border to and around 13 cities in Poland.

Leo Express offers free train tickets from the city of Košice in eastern Slovakia to anyone who can present a Ukrainian passport or national identity card.

PANEK provides 1000 of its cars to volunteers willing to transport refugees from the Polish-Ukrainian border to Poland. Volunteers should express their interest by email to [email protected]

Wizz Air offers 100,000 free tickets for short-haul flights from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania to anyone who can present a Ukrainian passport. They also offer tickets at a fixed and reduced rate to and from anywhere else in continental Europe, for refugees who are no longer in any of these four countries but have not yet reached their final destination.

Accommodation and care

Airbnb.org provides free short-term accommodation to nearly 100,000 Ukrainian refugees. Anyone interested in becoming a host or making a donation to finance the project can get involved on www.airbnb.org/help-ukraine.

HomeToGo has launched its own directory for refugees seeking shelter and for people wishing to offer accommodation.

Hopper offers a $200 booking credit (known as Carrot Cash, to be spent in its app) for Ukrainian nationals looking for a hotel throughout Europe. Applications should be submitted through this form.

#HospitalityHelps is an online initiative connecting Ukrainian refugees in need of accommodation with hotels offering rooms in 13 European countries. Refugees must present a Ukrainian passport or proof of residence/refugee status in Ukraine upon registration.

The Facebook group Host a sister, whose original goal is to connect female travelers and non-binary people with others offering safe accommodation, has seen an increase in the number of people lending accommodation to Ukrainian refugees. In turn, a member created a spin-off group, carry a sister, for those who need transportation. These plans are still only open to women and non-binary people.

Kiwi.com matches every charitable donation its employees make to help displaced Ukrainians. Its employees based in the Czech Republic volunteer to drive to the Slovak-Ukrainian border and transport refugees. In addition, the company will transform part of the space at its Brno headquarters into a Ukrainian children’s daycare arrival in town.

Numa offers free temporary accommodation (up to three days) to Ukrainian refugees arriving in one of nine cities in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy and Spain.

Although not based in Central Europe, the marketing agency Stay for the night created an international registration form for host providers wishing to reserve their spaces for Ukrainian refugees.

Additional help

Lock donates 5% of the turnover of all its European orders to NGOs working to support Ukrainians.

InPost lends its fleet of trucks to transport food, clothing and other humanitarian donations to the Polish-Ukrainian border.

RegioJet, ČD Cargo and Rail Cargo Group are collaborating on an initiative known as the “Railway Bridge” to transport humanitarian donations, collected by the charity People In Need, to Ukraine. The trains also bring refugees back to the Czech Republic.

Uber launched an in-app button for customers to donate to the International Rescue Committee charity. These donations are matched up to $1 million. The company also offers free car rides between the Polish-Ukrainian border and Polish cities, works with the International Red Cross in Romania to deliver essential supplies to Ukraine, and has donated $500,000 to support United Nations World Food Program efforts in Ukraine.
