A Psychedelic Guide to Amsterdam: What You Need to Know to Get Weird Dutch

As the rest of the world finally catches the psychedelic wave, the Netherlands are ahead in the game for a while now, at least when it comes to psilocybin mushrooms. While the country’s laws regarding so-called “magic” mushrooms have fluctuated frequently over the past few decades – ultimately culminating in a possession ban from 2008 – a legal loophole still allows for sale, possession and consumption. psilocybin mushroom “truffles”: the slightly less potent part of a mushroom that grows underground. An entire industry has sprung up as a result.

As a result, trips to Amsterdam have developed a healthy element of psychedelic tourism. Some people visit the renowned city specifically to indulge in these trippy treats, while others come for their own reasons, are tempted by businesses with large mushroom signs resembling Mario, and adopt a sort of “when in Rome” attitude. Whichever category you fall into, it’s best to start your trip to the Netherlands with a bit of preparation.

Which drugs are legal in Amsterdam?

To begin, let’s look at the legality of drugs in general.

Weed and hash are as legal as it gets. The “coffee shops” sell pantyhose in abundance, and people smoke quite openly everywhere. It is not uncommon to smell the pungent smell of pot floating on the terraces of restaurants and bars.

As already stated, the mushrooms are a little more up in the air. While psychedelic mushrooms themselves are illegal, the truffles they grow from, also known as philosopher’s stones– are perfectly legal.

All the other fun stuff – LSD, DMT, cocaine, MDMA, etc. – are more firmly illegal, though still less illegal than in most countries in the world. If the police catch you with small amounts, the worst you can expect is confiscation and possibly a fine. But just maybe.

Where to find psychedelic mushrooms in Amsterdam

Psychedelic truffles can be purchased at any of the “smart shops” (what a yummy nickname) that are scattered all over town. These businesses tend to have the same kind of vibe you get at a cannabis store or mainstream store, with the main difference being the presence and emphasis on truffles.

I am fan of the magic mushroom gallery, one of the city’s oldest smart stores, located right in the heart of Amsterdam for almost 30 years. The shop has a great vibe in general, but I particularly appreciate how they take a moment to get in touch with each truffle shopper, asking them if they have experience with the substances and giving them some tips for maximize safety and fun.

Where to taste psychedelics in Amsterdam

Pretty much anywhere, really. Amsterdam is, to sum up in a nutshell, chill, and it’s hard to imagine having bad juju everywhere you go. Beware of the ubiquitous bikes whistling everywhere, but other than that, take a walk and see where things take you.

If you’re in the mood for a bit of trippy barry nightlife, check out Stone’s Café Bar and Nightclub, where neon decor and a 4 a.m. closing time create a solid night of psychedelia. If you’re looking to enjoy a quiet afternoon outdoors, head to Vondelpark, a huge park near the city’s main museums. And speaking of museums, the fluorescent art museum electric ladyland was more or less made to enjoy it under the influence.

Where to sleep in Amsterdam

After a long day of wandering the streets of Amsterdam high like clouds and wondering if you’ve walked different canals or the same one over and over again, you need a good place to relax and unwind. relax for the night.

I suggest West of Amsterdam for several reasons. First of all, it is simply a great hotel, comfortably appointed with exceptional service. Second, its central location makes it ideal for getting in and out of the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam, and it’s only a few blocks from the aforementioned Magic Mushroom Gallery.

Finally, there are a lot of quirks. The decor is funky and unique. The shower is contained in a bizarre, fully enclosed chamber that makes it feel like you’re bathing in the vacuum of space. And if you fancy descending into ultra-tranquility, the spa — located in what was once an underground bank vault — is super polished and super cool.
