Airbnb changes price display on app after overload of complaints

Airbnb’s chief executive said on Monday there would be changes to the way the company displays prices on its app. The measure was taken after facing customer complaints.

“I heard you loud and clear – you feel like pricing isn’t transparent and payment tasks are a pain,” CEO Brian Chesky tweeted.

Airbnb is making four changes starting next month. Customers will be able to see the total price they need to pay upfront.

Guests would now be able to see the full price breakdown with Airbnb’s service fees, discounts and taxes, according to Chesky’s tweet. Chesky said the San Francisco-based company will prioritize total price in its search algorithm over nightly rate. He also said the company will launch new pricing and discount tools.

Responding to customer complaints about customers having to perform payment tasks, Chesky said customers shouldn’t have to perform “unreasonable payment tasks such as stripping beds, doing laundry or vacuuming.”

Airbnb, which has lost about 37% of its share value so far this year, has benefited from strong travel demand but now faces the risk of soaring inflation and a dollar strong.
