Airbnb will display hidden cleaning fees and ‘unreasonable payment tasks’

In an effort to increase transparency, Airbnb updates its total price display to include cleaning fees and guest payment tasks.

Users have long complained that pricing is not transparent and payment tasks are a “pain”.

“Starting next month, you’ll be able to see the total price you’re paying up front,” Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said in a tweet.

The home rental company said that from December it would start rolling out the full price display option in countries without existing price display requirements.

The total price will include all fees before taxes and will be displayed in search results, as well as on the map, filter and listing page.

Before confirming their reservation, guests can always view a full price breakdown showing Airbnb’s service fees, discounts, and taxes.

In the United Kingdom, this option has been available since 2019. For stays in the European Economic Area or in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Switzerland, customers see the total cost of their reservation, including cleaning, fees service charge and any applicable tourist tax, as well as the price per night set by their Host.

This is also the case in other countries where we have specific price display requirements, such as Australia, Canada and Korea.

“We started as an affordable alternative to hotels, and affordability is especially important today,” Chesky added.

Hosts should also display any reasonable payment requests to guests before booking.

“Guests shouldn’t have to perform unreasonable payment tasks like stripping beds, doing laundry or vacuuming when they leave their Airbnb,” Airbnb said.

“But we think it’s reasonable to ask guests to turn off lights, throw food in the trash and lock doors, as they would when leaving their own homes.”

The company also announced changes to its search algorithm that will prioritize total price over nightly price.

“This means that for similar listings in the same area, those with the highest quality and best overall prices will rank higher in search results,” Airbnb said in a statement.

Starting in early 2023, Hosts will also have new pricing and discount tools to help them understand the final price guests are paying and how to price competitively.
