For a man, this specific nightmare became his reality after booking a last minute trip to Amsterdam on the space rental platform.
Reported by local Amsterdam news site AT5, British tourist Ben Speller had the surprise of his life when he visited his Airbnb address. It turned out to be an oddly placed and dirty looking shipping container, not the nice piece he thought it would be. Immediately after opening the door and looking inside the barren “house” – which he paid $ 150 to rent it for the night – he told the media that he had moved away.

After taking photos of the rental, Ben Speller took to the public Facebook group The Spurs Show to express his distress. “So I booked a last minute Airbnb in Amsterdam,” read the post. “Advertised as a clean house with a private bathroom. That’s what we found.”
Ben revealed in the comments to his Facebook post that Airbnb had given him a full refund, even though the original host had declined. Listed as “Jacob,” the host in particular had another shipping container in Amsterdam listed under his name, according to Gizmodo, which authorities are investigating.
“Distorted or fraudulent ads have no place on our platform, and our team works hard to constantly strengthen our defenses and stay ahead of bad actors,” an Airbnb spokesperson told Gizmodo in an email. “Over half a billion people have traveled on Airbnb, and with over 2 million customers checking into an Airbnb every night, issues like this are incredibly rare. “
