At Fort Worth vigil for teen killed in Whataburger, mother says she forgave assailants

For those close to him, Zechariah Trevino was preparing a long story or a meal. He was ready with a joke. And he took care of a pet chicken.

Trevino, who was 17, was shot dead in a shooting while standing outside a Fort Worth fast food restaurant after classes ended Friday at Paschal High School, where he was a junior. His mother remembered him as a knight in shining armor who was killed while standing behind a cousin, who was also shot.

Erica Trevino described her son at the end of a prayer service and candlelight vigil at the university’s United Methodist Church in a block adjacent to Paschal High and Whataburger, the restaurant at 2401 W. Berry St where he worked and was killed.

The victim’s mother said that through tears she prayed and forgave the three teenage attackers that police arrested in connection with the murder.

“I just hope you find your way out of here,” Erica Trevino said of the attackers in an interview with reporters.

Her son was pronounced dead in a hospital less than an hour after he was shot. His cousin, also a student at Pascal’s high school, was shot dead at the same time. She appears to have told police that someone she knows as Danny B arrived at the restaurant in SUVs with four other people.

The surviving victim appears to have told the police that the shooting was motivated by her public criticism of a gang whose members she believed were involved in the overdose death of her sister.

An arrest warrant affidavit outlines the basis of the police investigation and the evidence that homicide detectives have concluded exists to support the arrests in the case of three teenage murder suspects. The document redacts the name of the surviving female victim. Other information in the document clarifies his role as eyewitness and victim.

Police arrested Daniel Reed and Isaiah Nunez, both 17, on suspicion of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, along with a 16-year-old man whose name police did not release in because of his age.
