Best movies and TV shows on HBO Max this weekend (October 29-30, 2022)

The end of October is approaching and Halloween is right around the corner for anyone celebrating the spooky season. Halloween may be a Monday this year, but that doesn’t mean Saturday or Sunday can’t be honorary Halloween with all the horror movies and TV show episodes streaming. HBO Max. But this weekend is not just Halloween – the most enthusiastic, The White Lotus is back for a second season, and this time in Italy with a new set of characters. Additionally, the announcement of Industry being renewed for a third season calls for a rewatch. Here are CBR’s recommendations for movies and shows to stream on HBO Max this weekend.

The White Lotus is heading to Sicily for Season 2

After win big at the 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards, The White Lotus has a whole first season to follow. No one thought it could beat the odd dynamic of families and newlyweds vacationing in Hawaii, but Jennifer Coolidge and Aubrey Plaza are the stars of this season, so Season 2 rises to the challenge. Critics have already called this season utterly pristine, with the writing still as delightful and the characters as awful as they were last season. If an HBO show doesn’t have truly awful characters that viewers can’t help but root for, is it really an HBO show?

While last season was set at the White Lotus hotel in Hawaii, this season takes place at a resort in Sicily. Coolidge returns as the beaming Tanya, which brought on Haley Lu Richardson as Portia, a young woman working for her. The other standout actor includes Aubrey Plaza as Harper, a woman on vacation with her husband and friends, and she’s already been described as this season’s star to watch. And while The White Lotus Season 2 is set on a totally different continent, there’s still one key similarity that doesn’t get old: the opening of a corpse and the start of a murder mystery. Hopefully this season can stay as addictive as the first and make guessing who the corpse is even harder.

Catch up on Doctor Who Season 13

Doctor Who returns with a different face in 2023, so fans must say goodbye to Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor. HBO Max is currently airing the 13th season to catch up before the airing of season 14 and the hype of the return of David Tennant thus only gives more reason to review. Additionally, Season 13 opens with a Halloween episode that can help get viewers in the mood before they put on a costume and celebrate.

During Whittaker’s final season as the Thirteenth Doctor, she and her companions Yasmin Khan and Dan Lewis navigate the end-of-universe anomaly called “Flux”, which reveals more secrets about the Doctor’s past. But it’s not a Doctor Who season without incorporating enemies from the Doctor’s past into the mix. In the end, the season turned out to be the biggest and most jaw-dropping yet – even the Doctor spends most of his time searching for answers about his past.

Try to keep up with all the betrayals in the industry

Industry is one of those shows that is immensely popular in a specific niche, but has yet to be discovered by the mainstream media as one of the best series to stream right now. The perfect way to describe the series is that it’s a mix of the commercial and cutthroat nature of Succession and sex and drugs Euphoria. The show starts off a little rough constantly throwing financial business jargon at the audience, which makes Grey’s Anatomy medical terminology looks like an easy practical guide to surgery. However, the show finds its feet in the second season, which is why it was recently renewed for a third by HBO.

Industry follows a young group of graduates who compete for permanent positions at Pierpoint & Co., a prestigious investment bank in London. What makes the competition so fierce and intriguing is that everyone is so unlikable that it’s hard to put down roots for anyone. Everyone’s trying to get along in the worst possible way, and there’s no heroes in this show. Each character has a goal to climb the corporate ladder and, being as young as they are, will make terrible and unforgivable mistakes to get there.

Barbarian makes Airbnb terrifying

Barbaric is a twisted nightmare that gets more tense and weird as the film progresses. The film opens with Tess, the protagonist, in a blossoming relationship with Keith, who twice books the Airbnb she is staying at. Although the attraction is definitely there, the red flags are all too real and it soon plunges into a horrific situation. The film has even been called better version of Passengers for not romanticizing the situation between Tess and Keith and letting the romance die when the horror hits. Barbaric takes an ominous turn soon after it begins, but it’s the horror movie to watch this Halloween if viewers want an original and ambitious film to remember.

The purge creates a terrifying “what if” scenario

The purge is considered a modern horror film that will one day be considered a classic. The first movie released in 2013 sparked an entire franchise that includes several sequels, a prequel, and a TV series. In the first film, a wealthy family (led by Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey) must wait out the Purge, an annual night when all crime is temporarily legal. But once their security system fails, they must learn to survive the night alone, with murderers stalking them. It’s not one of the best horror films to hit the scene in the past decade, but it’s certainly memorable and poses a lot of “what if” questions.
