Birmingham native Abigail Barlow wins first Grammy for popular musical Bridgerton

Birmingham is on the national stage, thanks to a phenomenal TikTok musical that has gone viral. Birmingham native Abigail Barlow and her co-writer Emily Bear are officially Grammy winners. In 2021, Abigail Barlow began writing and performing songs inspired by the popular Netflix series Bridgerton. Her songs quickly caught the eye on TikTok and soon enough, she and her co-writer Emily Bear were causing a stir. The musical includes 15 original songs following the plot and characters of Bridgerton.

Don’t know the show? It is set in Regency-era England and follows a wealthy family as they enter dating season and series star Daphne Bridgerton attempts to find a husband.

Besides being Barlow and Bear’s first Grammy win, this award also goes down in history as the first award given to a project that started on TikTok.

Abigail Barlow’s connections to Birmingham run deep. The Mountain Brook native had theatrical and artistic experience in several Birmingham-based companies, including the Red Mountain Theater Company.

Abigail Barlow wasn’t the only Birminghamian at the Grammys this year. Nick Sellers, from Birmingham, CEO of the 2022 World Games, was present along with Rashada LeRoy, Executive Producer of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and Henry Panion III, Creative Director. One of the musical artists who performed at the 2022 World Games Opening Ceremony, The Blind Boys of Alabama, was also nominated for a Grammy!
