At Bham Now we are always on the lookout for new local restaurants, that’s what we do. In January, we hit the jackpot. A one-of-a-kind restaurant has just opened at The Waites on 7th Avenue South.
The place?
Potahtoz potatoes and the perfect pizza. Here are the details.
Baked potatoes + pizza = perfect comfort food
Why aren’t baked potatoes and pizza sold together? This is the question I asked when I studied the menu of Potahtoz potatoes and the perfect pizza.
Baked potatoes and loaded pizza. Brilliant! As a comfort food connoisseur, this menu — which also includes wings and a standout cheesecake — is heavenly.
Potahtoz potatoes and the perfect pizza co-owner Vinson Walker, a Hueytown native, told me he offered the baked potato side of the menu before the pandemic hit in 2020.
“The idea came before COVID,” Walker explained. “I got a little sick and didn’t feel well with flu-like symptoms. I wanted a baked potato, not the traditional Full Moon or Jim & Nick type potato. I couldn’t find any, so I went to bed, still wanting that baked potato. I woke up the next day and God gave me the idea to [start a restaurant]. And here we are!”
It took a few years and a global pandemic, but it all came together when Walker teamed up with Randal Scott, who was looking to build a brick-and-mortar pizzeria near the Crossplex. They moved to the old location of Blaze Pizza at 707 Richard Arrington Blvd. who already had a pizza oven. Just like that, Birmingham’s first baked potato and pizza restaurant was born.
what’s for dinner
Clearly, Walker loves all of his baked potatoes (here’s the menu), but I asked for his four favorites. He listed:
- Chest
- BBQ
- Chicken Alfredo
- The Smokey – includes dipped sausages
AT Potahtoz potatoes and the perfect pizza, don’t be afraid to get creative. There are so many menu options: all kinds of vegetables, steaks, even seafood, prawns and salmon.
On the pizza side of the menu, he surprised me by recommending the gluten free pizza. And of course, all pies can be made to your specifications and are freshly baked in front of you.
Schedules and Atmosphere
Potatoe Potahtoz & Perfec Pizza is open every day except Sunday.
Here are their hours:
Monday-Thursday – 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Friday and Saturday – 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Although it’s been open for just under a month, Friday night karaoke has already become a staple among regulars. And yes, they serve beer, including a number of local brands.
How about the name
Aside from the original concept, a lot of people are asking about the name. There is an easy answer to this. When the company attempted to register its name with the state of Alabama, there were already restaurants with the names Potato Potahto AND Perfect Pizza.
So they created their own original brand: Potahtoz potatoes and the perfect pizza.
“Service matters. When customers come here, we want them to have an uplifting atmosphere and lots of fun. They will get good food at a reasonable price and they will definitely come back,” he concluded.
