For many (us included, tbh), the prospect of becoming a “digital nomad” becomes very tempting indeed. Faced with the realization in the age of the pandemic that many of us do not actually need to work in an office, some have chosen not only to work from home, but to do their work remotely from a totally different place – potentially with lower cost of living and better weather.
Countries around the world have rewarded the desires of remote workers with digital nomad visasbut now a nation has gone further. Brazil is becoming the first country in South America to create an entire village just for overseas distant workers.
So why would you want to work abroad but do not live with the locals? Well, it seems that the Brazilian program is designed for people who want to live somewhere a little sunnier, prettier and more idyllic, but who don’t necessarily want the shock of being thrown into the depths of a culture totally unknown.
Of course, it’s probably not for everyone – after all, immersing yourself in a new culture is usually part of the fun – but it could be a game-changer for some. The project is called ‘Nomad Village Brazil‘ and it’s run by a Lisbon-based start-up NomadX.
Nomad Village Brazil will be in Pipa, a city in northeast Brazil known for having one of the most spectacular beaches in the country. It is about a 90-minute drive from the nearby regional capital of Natal, itself about a six-hour flight from Rio de Janeiro.
Nomads in the village can expect a huge range of accommodation and facilities, from apartments and swimming pools to communal living and working areas.
Besides the tons of sunshine and heavenly vibes, there are other benefits to working in Brazil as a digital nomad. Chief among them is the fact that, for those working for European countries, the time difference (between four and six hours) is much more manageable than the likes of Costa Rica or bali.
Brazil’s digital nomad visa scheme, which was introduced in January, says anyone who earns more than $1,500 (£1,280) a month and has a valid passport and health insurance can apply to live and work in the country for up to 12 months.
