If you’re like us, you were probably pretty sad to learn that the Allegheny Overlook wouldn’t be returning for another season in 2022. This pop-up space on Fort Duquesne Blvd was a relaxing hangout with food trucks, great views on the Allegheny River and PNC Park, and, perhaps most importantly, beer from one of our favorite breweries, Braddock-based Brew Gentlemen.

While we still mourn this closure, there is good news as Brew Gentlemen is staying in downtown Pittsburgh in the summer of 2022 with a new pop-up beer garden at Steel Plaza on Grant Street!

Naturally, we had to check this one out shortly after it opened for the season and share a bit more about what to expect from this one.

A sweet atmosphere at Brew Gentlemen’s Pop Up

Steel Plaza is definitely not the kind of place we spend a lot of time in whenever we’re downtown. Other than walking down Grant Street (while marveling at the buildings) or dropping by Christmas in Pittsburgh for the giant nativity scene, we really have no other reason to stop in this particular square – until now.

Brew Gentlemen’s popup does the space justice without really impacting the landscape. If the Allegheny Overlook was as splashy as it gets, it’s the opposite in every way. The setup is simply Brew Gentlemen’s mobile truck, plenty of seating for 75 or 100 people, a stage for live music and, depending on the day and weather, possibly garden games like cornhole.

That’s it.

When you’re at this one, you can really be surrounded by people just having an outdoor meeting with a beer, working on a laptop, or listening to music with a quick brew after work. I even commented on how jealous I was of the people who work in the Steel Tower building for having a stellar beer out front, but then it called me back by many people working in an office are still pretty awful (it’s true, but I wouldn’t complain either if Brew Gentlemen were set up 20 feet from my office front door).

For those unfamiliar with Brew Gentlemen’s mobile truck, they often offer a dozen beers on tap and, during our visit, a healthy mix of IPAs, lagers, wheat beers and fruit beers. Garden Party (cucumber wheat) and Muchos Mahalos (a tropical beer made with POG juice) are two summer staples to check out if they’re available, as they’re perfect for quenching your thirst on a hot summer day.

From there, if you’re looking for more than beer, you’ll do well to check out Brew Gentlemen’s Instagram Feed to check when there is live music and/or food trucks (the former seems much more common than the latter – luckily there are a ton of great restaurants in downtown Pittsburgh to visit after visiting the pop-up). During our quick visit, we had the chance to listen to a few songs featuring local legend Byron Nash, which really helped to improve our happy hour experience considerably.

So if you ignore the beer for a minute, it’s definitely worth repeating that this popup will also be one of the best places for live music downtown in the summer – good music is really hard to find downtown at certain times and this one will solve that problem!

Finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the Steel Plaza vibe outright. While earlier in this article we said we weren’t really stopping at this one, it took visiting the pop-up to realize just how beautiful the views are from this area. Not only will you be able to see the imposing steel tower up close, but the plaza also offers great views of the BNY Mellon Building, the Union Trust Building, the Omni William Penn Hotel and the Alcoa Building to name a few. ‘a little. The amount of history in these buildings alone is simply awe-inspiring and a great thing to think about when sipping a beer.

Oh and as a bonus most of these buildings block the sun when it goes down so we enjoyed our 5pm beers in a good amount of shade too – winner!

So if you’re looking for a delicious beer in downtown Pittsburgh, you have no excuse to skip Brew Gentlemen’s relaxing popup. If all goes well, we hope that this spot will also stay for more than one season!

Brew Gentlemen’s Summer Popup is at the US Steel Plaza on Grant and Sixth in downtown Pittsburgh. In 2022, the beer garden is expected to operate Tuesday-Saturday 3-8pm, but as always, worth confirming on their website Where social media before visiting, as we can imagine that the weather and other occasional events downtown could impact operations. At this time, we don’t know the end date for the popup, but we’re hoping it’ll be around until Labor Day (or later!) while we wait for the weather.
