Budapest’s ‘open book fountain’ turns its own liquid pages

Here’s something we’d love to see a lot more of: It’s an “open delivered fountain” in Hungary which looks like a giant tome with its liquid pages read by an invisible and voracious reader. And while there isn’t much information available about the Book Fountain online (at least here in the US), it doesn’t take many words to appreciate its implied mission to keep books beautiful. physical present in people’s minds.

This particular fountain of books, located in Egyetem Square in Budapest, was built in 2012 and stands opposite the Eötvös Loránd University of Sciences. But an engineer and scientist on twitter, who has the handle, Massimo, recently posted a new Open Book Fountain GIF and it’s definitely one of the coolest book fountains out there.

“How many fountains of books could there be all around the Earth right now?” some people may wonder at this point. It turns out, a lot more than they think. (Or at least more than we would.)

There are, in fact, at least seven fountains of books in four different countries, including the United States, China, Turkey and Hungary, and we know this because there is a handy list of them available in this An armchair traveler’s travelogue blog post. Oh, and by the way – for anyone wondering, this open book fountain in Hungary was definitely the inspiration for a similar fountain in Istanbul. It’s probably not entirely relevant to enjoy this clip, but the Open Book Fountain Archive seemed to think it was important, so we’re grading it, dang it!

What do you think of this open book fountain in Hungary? Have you ever seen a cooler book-themed statue or fountain on your travels around the world? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
