The NFL on Thursday announced its international “home” teams for the 2023 season. Among the teams announced are the Buffalo Bills. The Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots have also been named as home teams for the upcoming season. International games seem like a revenue-generating machine for NFL owners and exciting destinations for some of the league’s most enthusiastic fanbases…like Buffalo!

According to the Associate Press, NFL Executive Vice President of Club Affairs, Major Events and International Business Peter O’Reilly spoke of the league’s enthusiasm for these games. “We have a long history and we continue to grow, but these international games are essential. Those who have been there and experienced it, you just see the passion of the fans in these markets. This is an opportunity for them to experience the best of the NFL live and it’s a year-round engagement opportunity with the fans there.” This enthusiasm translates into new untapped revenue for owners and it works well.

According to ESPN.com five international matches in 2022 have set record attendance and viewership with increasing ticket demand and fan numbers for the league across the world. Each match was sold out with a total of 356,116 attendees. So where should Buffalo Bills fans buy their plane tickets?

The Bills and Titans will play their “home” games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England. The Jaguars will also host in London at Wembley Stadium. The Chiefs and Patriots will play in Germany. Opponents, dates and times will be released along with the full 2023 NFL schedule at a later date. How does the NFL select “home” teams?

The 17-game season gave the teams a ninth home game every two seasons. Four of these “home” teams are designated to play an international match that year. Do these games lead to an NFL expansion team in Europe in the near future? Peter O’Reilly was not final. “There are certainly complexities to overcome if you want to have a team in Europe.
