The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a missing man whose boat ran aground at Melbourne Beach last Wednesday.

The Coast Guard said they searched about 4,264 square miles over a 132-hour period, but they were unable to find 68-year-old Dale Hossfield at that time.

A research coordinator said it was a difficult decision to put the research on hold.

“We send our deepest condolences to Dale’s family and friends during this difficult time,” said Lt. Cmdr. Coast Guard’s Daniel Delgado said.

Katherine Bond arrived at her Airbnb in Melbourne Beach the night of Hossfield’s disappearance for an unexpected sight.

“There was a boat here right behind the house on the sand and there was a sheriff’s helicopter just a house down,” Bond said.

Bond said the 29ft boat was beached on the sand and a sheriff’s helicopter and several deputies were also on the beach.

“The deputies were here sort of watching the boat, and later that evening a tug came to take it away,” Bond said.

According to the Coast Guard and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, the boat belonged to 68-year-old Dale Hossfield.

Investigators said Hossfield was last seen getting out of his storage boat in Fort Pierce on Wednesday morning and was last seen getting out of the entrance around 2 p.m.

At one point, a concerned relative reported her missing.

His boat was reported to the Coast Guard around 5.45pm on Wednesday, beached at Melbourne Beach with the engine still running but no sign of Hossfield.

Bond said it took the sheriff’s office several hours Wednesday night to get the boat off the ground.

“A deputy had to swim twice to the tow boat to try and get them the rope. At first the rope broke and flew back,” Bond said.

Bond said they eventually managed to tow the boat away from shore.

The Coast Guard, FWC and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office conducted grid searches all day Thursday of last week on the shoreline where Hossfield’s boat was found in hopes of locating the man faded away.

“Our thoughts are with the family and the missing person and we look forward to their safe recovery,” Bond said.
