Empty Storage Fund, January 14, 2023

January 13—The Empty Stocking Fund is a 41-year-old project by The New Mexican. Each year, hundreds of people receive assistance from the fund during the holiday season to help cover rent payments, medical bills, utility costs, car repairs, home improvements and other needs.

Who it helps: Applicants, who must live within 50 miles of Santa Fe and must provide documentation proving their identity, are considered regardless of race, age, ethnicity, gender identity or ethnicity. sexual orientation. Applications are now closed.

How it works: Funding requests are carefully reviewed. Members of the Empty Storage Committee review applications, meet with each qualified applicant to review records of unpaid bills or other needs, and verify the applicant’s income. If an application is approved, the committee sends a check directly to the service provider. Applications can reach $2,500 per household depending on need.

This holiday charity project, which began in 1981, is jointly administered by the Santa Fe Community Foundation, Enterprise Bank and Trust, The Salvation Army, Presbyterian Medical Services, The Life Link, Habitat for Humanity, Esperanza Shelter, Youth Shelters and Family Services, Maison de Gérard and an individual.

As of Tuesday, the fund had already paid out $240,000 to this year’s nominees.

2022 objective: $375,000. The fund has raised nearly $374,000 as of January 6, but needs your help to reach this year’s goal.
