Glasgow Circuit rider recounts ‘carnage’ after escaping horror bike crash

A cyclist has been left with a shredded left arm after escaping a horrific biking accident.

Brave Danyon Hume has revealed the “carnage” of running over three other riders during a speedway derby race between Edinburgh and Glasgow on Friday July 29.

The 26-year-old, who is signed to the Glasgow Tigers speed team, was advised by paramedics to sit out the rest of the races but refused and got back on his bike.

Meanwhile, teammate Craig Cook, 31, reportedly suffered two dislocated thumbs and the Edinburgh riders were left with a broken collarbone, a dislocated right shoulder and a broken finger.

It comes as the sport involves four to six riders competing on fuel-powered bikes without brakes over four counter-clockwise laps of an oval circuit at up to 70 mph.

Near the start of the derby, the four riders collided as they tried to turn a bend, causing a ‘domino effect’ crash in front of an audience of around 800 people.

Danyon told the Glasgow Times there was ‘no room for error’ as the accident happened at Armadale which has a ‘small narrow track’.

He said: “The accident was like a domino effect. We just walked into each other.

“I was sandwiched between two runners and I was pulled forward and hit another runner, it was carnage.

“I came away with a big gravel wrap on my arm, but I came out the lightest.

“The paramedics told me not to roll because it was bad enough, but since I could move it I knew it wasn’t broken.

“It was the local derby between Edinburgh and Glasgow and I knew my team-mate Craig had to pull out, so the pressure was on.

“I didn’t want to let anyone down so I decided to smile and bear the pain to carry on.

“The adrenaline helps and after that I went out and won the next race, so that helps.

“It’s one of those sports where you just have to accept the risk, accidents can happen because the bikes don’t have brakes.”

The crash happened at the Armadale Edinburgh Monarchs Stadium in the first ever home derby race.

A Glasgow Tigers Speedway team spokesperson confirmed it was unusual for all riders in a race to be injured in a single accident.

Speaking to The Glasgow Times, a spokesperson said: “It is very unusual for all four runners to be injured in one race, they all fell on top of each other.

“The first runner fell and it was just a domino effect because they all hit him, they couldn’t avoid him.

“Accidents happen, but normally there are only two or three and they get up and walk away to continue, but it was much worse.

“These guys are all full-time professional speed riders, they know what they’re doing.”
