Grand Union replaces major Chenango and Otsego markets

A merger between Tops and Price Chopper/Market 32 that was approved in 2020 will bring a nostalgic grocery chain back to two different locations in our area: one in Otsego County and the other in Chenango. The Tops grocery store in
5 Commons Dr. in Cooperstown and the Tops at 54 E Main St. in Norwich will both be turned into Grand Union stores according to PriceChopper.com.

The new parent company for these stores is Northeast Grocery, Inc., headquartered in Schenectady, which will oversee operations with current Price Chopper/Market 32 CEO Scott Grimmett heading Northeast. The good news of PriceChopper.com is that the Cooperstown and Norwich store, which are slated to become Grand Union stores (two of twelve stores in New York State), will retain current unionized employees and officers.

According to WKTV.com, Cooperstown Tops Market will close on January 30 and reopen on February 5 as Grand Union with the official opening on March 4, 2022.

Personally, I want a Great Union to return to Oneonta. It was located in Ames Square at the western end of Oneonta. Ever since I was a young single adult, I used to shop at Grand Union because I felt this store had the best prices in town. It was definitely not a modern, fancy store when I shopped there. It was actually rather dated in decor and worn around the edges as they say but the islets were wide and the prices were low. It was exactly what I liked. I look forward to a somewhat nostalgic shopping experience when Grand Union comes to Cooperstown, even though the new store looks nothing like my beloved Oneonta Grand Union from 30 years ago except for the name on the front.
