Huge Football Tournament This Weekend in Birmingham Underground, Shelby County

SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Get ready for a busy weekend as hundreds of youth sports teams will be in town for the biggest youth sporting event in state history.

This is a three-day football tournament, and several games will be played in Shelby County, including Heardmont Park.

Let’s start with Alabaster, where the newly renovated Veterans Park will be used for the tournament.

Alabaster Parks and Rec’s Timm Hamm said he was thrilled for people around the world to see what Alabaster has to offer.

“These people will be buying gas, buying food and hopefully also using the hotels here in Alabaster, we are excited to see what this tournament brings to Alabaster,” Hamm said. “We’ve always hosted baseball and softball tournaments, but never a football tournament this big, so we’re very excited to see what impact it will have on our city this weekend.”

At Calera at Eagle Sports Park, Seth Gandy said they were ready for the start of the games.

“At the end of the day, we love to host, I think the town of Calera is a great place, it’s a wonderful place to host events,” Gandy said. “We certainly appreciate all the guests and seeing all the different license labels that we see passing through our town and that’s just something we really love to do.”

Heardmont and Dunnavant parks will also be used during the tournament.

On the traffic side, with 375 teams in town, some delays are to be expected.

The tournament starts on Friday and ends on Sunday.

This tournament is expected to have an estimated economic impact of $7.8 million on the Birmingham metropolitan area.
