It’s been a rewarding summer movie season for horror audiences coming to AMC theaters. People fleeing the heat cheered on young Mason Thames for escaping Ethan Hawke in THE BLACK PHONE. Curious theatergoers continue to watch the skies as they solve the many mysteries of NOPE, which continues to play strong. But on the horizon is a horror movie that will deliver twists you’ll never see coming. Get ready for BARBARIAN.
Written and directed by Zach Cregger, BARBARIAN is one of those horror movies where we can’t give you too many details because once you get past a certain point in the description, you start revealing too many points. juicy plot. And this is definitely one where you’re going to want to know as little as possible, for maximum effect.
So what can we tell you?
You will scream at the screen in Barbarian
Yes, it’s one of those types of horror movies, which are best enjoyed with a packed crowd of people sitting on the edges of their seats. Georgina Campbell plays Tess in BARBARIAN, a potential research assistant who hopes to land a job on a documentary crew. She’s in Detroit for a meeting the next morning. But when she arrives at the AirBNB she booked, another person (Bill Skarsgard from IT and IT: CHAPTER TWO) has already occupied it.
Where does it go from there? Well, it starts harmless. Skarsgard’s character seems as confused as Campbell’s by AirBNB’s confusion, and he just wants Tess to feel safe in what is obviously a very delicate situation. But Tess’ trip to Michigan is about to take a very sharp left turn, so hold on to your armrests.
Justin Long can’t tell you anything about his role in Barbarian
In a perfect script, Justin Long probably doesn’t even want you to know he’s in the BARBARIOUS movie. While speaking with CinemaBlend at the recent San Diego Comic-Con, where AMC Theaters and CinemaBlend hosted a special preview screening of BARBARIAN, Long told the news site, “When I read (the screenplay), I was struck by fear, but also by the plot of the story. He draws you in, because you don’t know (where he is going). And he plays on a lot of horror movie tropes, and so it makes you guess incorrectly all the time.
But that’s a big part of the fun of BARBARIAN – trying to figure out where the story is heading and how much worse things can get for our main characters. Just when you think the scariest times have passed, something else lurks around the corner or in a dark hallway.
While Long is captivating in BARBARE, he was quick to single out his co-star, Georgina Campbell, and the actions Zach Cregger had him do in the story. “She’s so engaging and approachable, but he also makes her do smart things,” Long said. “A lot of times in horror movies – and I’ve played roles like that – you’re like, ‘Why is someone going back in there? Call the police!’ There are things that most people would do on their own, and she does those things. She’s a smart character.
You will likely have conversations long after leaving BARBARIAN, wondering what you would have done if you had found yourself in the same situation as the people in the story. There are no easy answers. But the questions start to arise once BARBARIAN opens in AMC theaters as part of our AMC Thrills and Chills program on September 9th.
BARBARIAN was just one of many highlights at San Diego Comic-Con this year, and it’s also one of a few highly anticipated horror movies set to open in AMC theaters in the near future.
