Live like royalty in this Kilkenny castle available to rent on Airbnb

Airbnb is full of extraordinary and unusual properties, and this one has to be up there as one of the most unique stays available in Ireland. You can rent all of Tubbrid Castle in County Kilkenny, the place where an actual king once chose to stay. A castle is certainly a world away from our cramped space and expensive rent in London, surely making it the perfect getaway from the bustling city!

This magnificent Castle dates back to the 15th century when Margaret Fitzgerald, 8th Countess of Ormond, ordered the construction of the castle. She stayed in the top floor bedroom named after her: Leapa Mhaighread (Margaret’s bed).

However, its history of the place where it was erected is much richer and more complex. In 942 AD, before the Castle had been built, Muircheartach (King of Ulster) chose to camp at the site of the castle as he marched his army south. He was on his way to avenge his allies whom Callaghan, King of Cashel had attacked. The bedroom on the second floor bears his name: Rí Ailig (King Alex).

The downstairs bedroom is poignantly named Seomra Sheáin (John’s bedroom) in honor of the owner’s suite who began renovating the Castle, John Campion Sr. You would never know today that this magnificent castle was once a dilapidated building in need of so many renovations.
