Man stabbed to death at Birmingham nightclub on Boxing Day

The victim is believed to have been out with friends when she was approached by a group of people, West Midlands Police said.

Sydnee Power, 23, from Birmingham, described seeing ‘groups of guys’ who were ‘looking to cause trouble’ when he arrived at the club, adding: ‘As soon as my friends and I walked in we had a very strange atmosphere and the atmosphere was not good.

“There were just groups of guys everywhere, most of them looked in a bad mood. Many of them were definitely looking to cause trouble. They were clearly not there to enjoy the music.

Detective Inspector Michelle Thurgood, who was leading the investigation, said: ‘He was a young man enjoying himself with friends at a Boxing Day party, and our thoughts are with his friends and his family today.

“We know there were hundreds of people in the nightclub at the time. Although we have already spoken to a number of them, we still need to hear from everyone who was there and witnessed or even filmed what happened.

“We believe the victim was approached by a group of people and then stabbed, so we are working hard to identify everyone involved.”

The victim’s family has been informed and will be supported by specialist officers, the force added.

Detectives are watching CCTV from the nightclub and have urged anyone in the area to get in touch. Neighborhood officers will patrol the area over the next few days to provide reassurance, police said.

In a social media post, Crane said: “We are all deeply shocked and saddened that a man lost his life last night as our Boxing Day event drew to a close.

“We are working closely with West Midlands Police as they investigate this crime. We encourage anyone who witnessed this incident, or has information to share that could help West Midlands Police, to contact them directly.

The club canceled their New Year’s Eve event following the attack. The scene remains closed while evidence is collected, police said.

Crane nightclub has been approached for comment.
