THERE ARE SOME BIG PLANS FOR THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM, MANY AIMING TO TACKLE CRIME. AS MAYOR, RANDALL WOODFIN ADDRESSED THE COUNTY CLUB TODAY. HE WAS ASKED ABOUT THE WVTM DRIVING EXPOSURE. JARVIS ROBERTSON WAS THERE. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT THE CITY HAS BEEN FACING FOR A TIME. JAVIS. YES YOU HAVE AN EXHIBITION DRIVING HAS BEEN A PROBLEM HERE IN BIRMINGHAM AND AT TIMES EVEN BECOMES DEAD. SO AT THE INTERSECTION OF THIRD AVENUE, NORTH AND 19TH STREET NORTH. YOU CAN SEE HERE THEY HAVE THESE SPEED STRIPS WHICH HAVE BEEN PLACED TO HELP COMBAT THE PROBLEM. NEVERTHELESS, THE MAYOR WAS AGAIN ASKED ABOUT THIS TODAY. I HAVE MET CAR CLUB GROUPS, PROBABLY MORE THAN ONCE, HOPEING THEY WILL ENCOURAGE MEMBERS TO REFRAIN FROM DRIVING ON SHOW. HERE’S WHERE I HAVE THIS DANGEROUS BEHAVIOR ON CITY ROADS, PERIOD. AND IT’S NOT YOURS RIGHT NOW. THIS IS NOT NEGOTIABLE. BACK IN NOVEMBER, MAYOR RANDALL WOODFIN STANDED WITH STATE LEADERS TO ANNOUNCE NEW LEGISLATION TO TARGETING STREET SPORTS. HE WANTS TO SEE STREET CAMERAS, BUT SOME LEGISLATORS DON’T LIKE THIS IDEA. I ASK THEM TO GIVE AN EXCEPTION TO THE EXHIBITION DRIVE. WE STRONGLY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS TYPE OF ACTION. JOSHUA BUCHANAN IS THE OWNER OF BIRMINGHAM CARS AND COFFEE, AN AUTOMOTIVE GROUP. MAYOR SAYS THOSE HE MET RESPECT BUT SAYS ALSO, I ASKED MR. USE YOUR INFLUENCE, FOR NOW THE KNUCKLEHEADS ARE CALLING ATTENTION TO YOU. THEREFORE THE LEGISLATIVE WORKING SESSION DOES NOT START BEFORE MARCH. SO WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT A LITTLE TIME TO SEE IF ACTION WILL BE TAKEN. AGAINST CONDUCT OF EXPOSURE. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin delivered the State of the City Address on Tuesday afternoon. A packed room of guests and members of the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham was present. The mayor mentioned many of the positive things that happened in Birmingham in 2022. However, there were also problems. Crime has been a constant topic. It is also an umbrella term: rape, auto theft, robbery, murder, aggravated assault, burglary. Last year was one of the deadliest for the city. Another problem that keeps coming back: exposure management. We discussed with Woodfin in November legislation to eliminate the problem. He was questioned about it on Tuesday. The mayor is encouraging state lawmakers to act quickly on the matter. Woodfin also wants insurance companies to take a tougher stance and not provide coverage for those who participate in street sport, and for traffic cameras to be in place to catch perpetrators.
