Meet the Glasgow locals who are leaving the UAE out to help struggling dogs during the heatwave

Glasgow Good Samaritans support each other by leaving water for dogs and other animals.

social media Posts from across the city have been popping up since yesterday showing residents placing water bowls on the streets for pets.

They aim to help dogs prevent dehydration and heat exhaustion as temperatures continue to soar today.

Mike McColm of the Southside invites the dogs to drink fresh water on Haughview Terrace.

He said: “I’m a dog owner with two Jack Russels so I’m very aware of how the heat can affect dogs.

“I try to take mine out early in the morning and later at night to avoid the hottest times of the day, but I allow them to sit in the shade and splash around in the paddling pool during the after -noon warmer.

“I’ve seen a lot of dogs being walked when it’s way too hot for them. You can see them struggling, which is heartbreaking to see. Naturally, not everyone has time to take their dog out in more appropriate times of the day. I decided to put a bowl of cool water in the shade in front of our building so that if any furry friends walk past, they can stop at the entrance to our blinds, have a drink and take the time to cool off.

“This comes from a place of pure compassion. I love all dogs, big or small and think it would be best if more people could put water bowls for dogs so they can take a little drink with pleasure when they are out on their daily adventures.”

Many others have also decided to offer water to passing pets.

Caroline Kerhachan, from Rutherglen West just outside the town, placed a 15-litre water bottle near Wardlawhill Parish Church to give the animals refreshments during the heatwave.

She said: “I decided to do this because I have three greyhounds myself and they get tired easily after a few minutes.

“Also, this small area is traveled by many people who have dogs, including myself.”

Warning pet owners ahead of the heatwave, a Scottish SPCA spokesperson said: “With extremely hot weather forecast for the UK in the coming days, remember to keep your pets safe.

“Make sure all animals, including outdoor pets or farm animals, have access to sufficient water and shade.

“Only walk dogs early in the morning or late at night if it’s cool enough and never leave them in a hot car – they can overheat and die in minutes. If in doubt, skip the walk and take part in enrichment activities at home instead.”
