Melioidosis outbreak caused by aromatherapy spray sold at Walmart

Dozens of Walmart branches in several states have recalled an aromatherapy spray linked to an outbreak of melioidosis, a bacterial disease commonly found in tropical climates in Southeast Asia.

AllLubbock reports A total of 55 Walmart locations in 18 states sold the spray, including two in Lubbock, the Walmart at South Loop 289 and Quaker Avenue, and the Walmart at 4th Street and Frankford Avenue. The spray was also sold online.

The aromatherapy spray in question is called “Better Homes and Gardens Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones”. There are six different scents of this spray.

The spray has been linked to a death in Georgia and illnesses in Kansas, Minnesota and Texas.

Customers in possession of this spray are asked not to throw the product away, but to proceed as follows:

  1. Double pack the bottle in clean, clear zipper bags and place it in a small cardboard box. Return the wrapped and wrapped product to a Walmart store.
  2. Wash any sheets or laundry on which the product may have been sprayed with normal laundry detergent and dry completely in a hot dryer; bleach can be used if desired.
  3. Wipe down counters and surfaces that may be sprayed with undiluted disinfectant.
  4. Limit how much you handle the spray bottle and wash your hands thoroughly after touching the bottle or the sheets. If you used gloves when handling the bottle or cleaning, wash your hands afterwards.
  5. If you have used the product within the past 21 days and have symptoms of fever or other symptoms of melioidosis, see a doctor. If you have no symptoms but have still been exposed to the product, antibiotics are recommended.
