The New Bedford City Council approved an order for approximately $2 million to pay for the new vehicles. Pierce Manufacturing, Inc. of Appleton, Wisconsin, built the ladder truck, while E-ONEwith offices in Ocala, Florida, and Hamburg, New York, builds the engine truck.

“The single most important investment a local government can make in its fire department, other than its staff, is the purchase of new, modern firefighting equipment,” the New Bedford Fire Chief said. , Scott Kruger.

“While the existing 8-engine and 1-scale have served the department and the city well, they are coming to the end of their time as front-line devices,” Kruger said.

He said the existing 1 scale and 8 engine would return to “their new role as a reliable standby device” once the new parts arrived.

New Bedford Fire Department Local 841 President Billy Sylvia hopes the existing trucks will “hang on” until the new ones arrive next year. Sylvia said the department still has “limited reserve trucks that are older and need repairs.” He said the quint that the city bought for a quarter of a million dollars “is the only reserve of scale and does not fit in all stations, including downtown.”

Sylvia said that when the city takes possession of the new vehicles, “the front-line devices will all be newer and more modern.”

“It doesn’t replace the need for a fully staffed and properly trained department,” Sylvia said. “New equipment is always needed and great, but truck members do the heavy lifting to put out fires and provide assistance to the public.”

“Trucks also need to be properly maintained, and a functional and safe reserve fleet is always needed,” Sylvia said.
