Opening of America’s largest indoor water park in Minnesota?

Construction on America’s largest indoor water park could begin this summer in Minnesota and be ready for a 2024 opening.

The proposed 320,000 square foot water park, called Mystery Cove, would be built next to the Mall of America by the Triple Five Group, which owns the mall, and would include water slides, beaches, a food hall, and there has plans for a Hotel Attaché. Construction could start this summer and the water park could be open by 2024.

Most of the major hurdles have been removed at this point after the city of Bloomington yesterday approved much of the public funding for the project, according to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal (pay wall). The total cost of the project is expected to be approximately $422 million, of which about a quarter will be public funds, including $30 million for construction, funds for public infrastructure improvements and other costs, including construction of a parking ramp.

Bloomington’s agreement with the Triple Five Group requires Bloomington residents to benefit from discounted ticket prices, they will save approximately 25% off the expected ticket price of $60.

There are still a few things to settle before construction can begin, such as parking, access to the walkway and, of course, the final financing of the project must be closed.

Triple Five also owns the West Edmonton Mall in Canada, which is similar to the Mall of America, and has a 215,000 square foot water park that attracts approximately 500,000 visitors annually.

The water park would be located next to IKEA, opposite the Mall of America, currently there is only a giant parking lot there. The water park and shopping center would be connected by a walkway.
