Rhoda Denaburg Link, matriarch and radio star of Levy’s Fine Jewelry in Birmingham, dies

The matriarch of one of Birmingham’s best-known jewelery shops has died.

Rhoda Denaburg Link, owner of Levy’s Fine Jewelry, died Friday, August 19. Link was 86 years old.

Levy’s Fine Jewelry posted an announcement on social media on Sunday.

“It is with very heavy hearts that we announce our matriarch and the source of so much of our success and inspiration, the iconic Rhoda Denaburg Link, who passed away late Friday evening surrounded by her family,” the jewelry store wrote. “Rho Rho was the epitome of a strong, independent woman long before she was considered normal. Raising five children alone, she emphasized the importance of hard work, education and responsibility. , she taught us the importance of family and that it is not always blood that makes a person’s family.

A timeline on Levy’s website tells the story of the famous store. Joe Denaburg, Rhoda’s father, and Ethel Levy opened Levy’s in 1922 at 2116 Second Ave. NOT.

The store, which acquired one of the first pledge licenses in Alabama, specialized in the sale of watches, diamonds, musical instruments and sporting goods.

Joe Denaburg died in 1972. In the 1980s Rhoda Denaburg moved from Chicago to Birmingham to take a more active role at Levy’s. She married Marvin Link, a prominent New York jeweler, who helped Levy’s transition to a more jewelry-focused business model.

In the social media tribute, Levy’s sang the praises of Rhoda Denaburg Link as a business leader and owner, fondly remembering her voice on Levy’s vacation radio commercials.
