Sophie Morgan lists accessible accommodations on AirbnbDOMINIQUE MARLEY

Disability advocate and TV presenter Sophie Morgan is one of hundreds of hosts who have listed her home on Airbnb’s new Adapted C program.category.

The new section of the online rental platform of its site offers more than 1,000 accommodations accessible to people with disabilities. Each property is guaranteed to have “verified no-step paths in the home, bedroom and bathroom”, as well as additional accessibility features.

At Sophie’s one bedroom apartment in london is located on the Thames Path with views of Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and Canary Wharf. The property, which is available to rent whenever she travels, is listed with photos of accessibility features, including step-free access to entrances and a step-free shower.

“I have been in a wheelchair for about 19 years now. The world is not made for people with disabilities, but traveling is still 100% worth it,” says Sophie, who is known as a Paralympic Games presenter, directing groundbreaking documentaries such as Dispatches, featuring her own series Channel 4 Living Wild: How To Change Your Life, and joining ITV’s Loose Women as a guest panelist.

RESERVE NOW

Sophie has gone even further with her home so that it is completely accessible to her needs while being beautiful and modern.

We love blue kitchen cabinets contrasts with the light gray cupboards, the white walls and the parquet. Features include combination microwave oven, induction hob, fitted shelving, dishwasher, fridge and freezer, workstation and sink with boiling water and filtered water tap , with space below for wheelchair users.

The open plan living room has a raised burnt orange velor sofa and raised power outlets. In the bathroom, the accessible wet room is equipped with grab bars, a folding shower seat, a folding shower door and a large corner bath with grab bars.

Sophie, who released her first book, drive forward, in 2022, said, “One of my favorite things about my home is my accessible bathroom because it’s both beautiful and practical. This is part of the reason I wanted to become an Airbnb host because I want to share this bathroom with other wheelchair users.

“Inclusion when you travel impacts how you feel on another level. I’ve worked very hard to make my home accessible for me, and I know it would be great for so many other people too, in especially people with disabilities, so I really want to share it. Hosting on Airbnb is also a great way to earn extra money while I’m on vacation or on business.

CHECK AVAILABILITY

To encourage others to make their homes more accessible, Sophie shared three tips on how to do this:

  1. Communicate well with your guests and be open to answering specific questions about your listing.

  2. Share as many photos of the space as possible, including detailed descriptions of accessibility features.

  3. Provide additional information about your listing’s location, such as recommendations for restaurants and accessible attractions in the area. All this information makes all the difference.

Amanda Cupples, General Manager for Northern Europe at Airbnb, comments: “We are committed to facilitating freedom of movement for people with disabilities and other accessibility needs. The launch of the new Adapted category on Airbnb is another step in our mission to inspire travelers with reduced mobility to travel, and easily find and book incredible spaces, just like Sophie’s home in London.
