‘the library’ is a renovated triplex in barcelona
‘The Library’, a dynamic and breathable four-storey house
LoCa Studio recently completed “The Library”, a renovated four storey house in Barcelona, Spain. Named after the owner’s love for the vibrancy of the city and the need for a protected and spacious space residencethe accommodation combines four floors of an existing building that the architects transformed into a single house with breathable spaces and discreet constructive interventions from the inside.
From the existing structures, it was essential to maintain material continuity by rearranging the hierarchy of spaces. To do this, the workshop demolished the floors, tripled the open spaces and created interior fluidity. As a result, the extension of existing materials, such as wood, to the new floors and the diffusion of the modern style into the older rooms, gave the final architectural layout a sense of unity.

create spatial and material continuity
The first step in the reorganization of the house was to open up a large double space between the living room on the ground floor and the workshop on the first floor. The architects at LoCa Studio created this opening to optimize natural light and emphasize the connections between common areas. The second double space is connected to the studio with the new floor – merging the three main floors through wall art, books, natural light and a breathable design.
Meanwhile, the basement retains its privacy and independence as a bunker and provides a quiet space to read and relax. It connects directly to the private garden and the outdoor patio equipped with an outdoor wooden dining table to enjoy with friends and family.
