(NEXSTAR) – Although Texas isn’t home to the majority of America’s wealthiest people – California holds this title – it is the home of the richest American, according to Forbes. He is one of 43 Texas residents who made Forbes’ list this year, even though his net worth just took a hit.
That’s right, Elon Musk, the man behind Tesla and SpaceX, and the new CEO of Twitter, is the richest person in Texas. When Forbes released its list of the 400 richest people living in America, Musk’s net worth was $251 billion. On Friday, his net worth is listed as just under $175 billion, according to Forbes, which is still about $25 billion more than the next richest American, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Other Texas billionaires got rich through a variety of businesses, including retail, athletics, oil, investments, hearing aids, and alcohol.
After Musk, Alice Walton is the second richest resident of Texas and the richest woman in the Lone Star State. According to Forbes, the main source of her wealth comes from Walmart – she is the only daughter of the chain’s founder, Sam Walton. She doesn’t work for Walmart like her brothers, Rob and Jim, but instead is president of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Among the wealthiest Texans are Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies; Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones; spouses Stanley Kroenke and Ann Walton Kroenke (although listed separately); Tilman Fertitta, owner of the Houston Rockets; Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia; and Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks.

Musk was the only Texas resident to rank among Forbes’ 10 richest Americans. He was ahead of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Microsoft’s Bill Gates.
