The Sailing La Vagabonde Couple Stays in America’s Most Dangerous Airbnb

An Australian couple stayed at America’s most dangerous hotel for three nights with their two young sons, showing fans of their adventures how you can book it too.

Riley Whitelum, 37, and Elayna Carausu, 28, have developed a combined following of over 1.74 million YouTube subscribers while documenting their lives sailing around the world aboard a luxury yacht with their two young children.

On October 18, they shared a video titled “Three nights in the most dangerous hotel in America” which saw them calling the $1,550 a night Frying Pan Tower located off the coast of North Carolina home.

The family had to be hooked to a Bosun chair to be hoisted 41 meters into the air to even access the front door of their hotel, which is mainly used by sailors in the Atlantic Ocean and for environmental research.

It takes two hours on a small boat to get to the site and minimal luggage and equipment can be brought on board.

Elayna strapped their youngest child, Darwin, to her chest as she sat in the chair, while Riley was accused of Lenny.

The bottom of the accommodation, which is actually a platform, is home to a number of circling sharks and large barracudas.

“It’s not a five star but I prefer places like this,” Riley said in the video.

There are eight guest bedrooms and two bathrooms, with Elayna commenting that she was shocked at how much material they managed to get inside – considering it’s in the middle of the ocean.

“Owner Richard has pretty much left us to our own devices since we got here,” she said.

Riley and Elayna’s journey so far has not always been without its dangers: from a “nightmare” encounter with pirates while sailing near the Galapagos Islands to catching a deadly virus and being dragged out to sea by another boat.

And then, of course, there are the controversies that are an integral part of life at sea.

Elanya admits that living in such close quarters is not easy and the tension can quickly rise: “In the past we argued and we really can’t stand looking at each other. The boat is so small that there is literally nowhere to go!

In 2017, Riley and Elayna took possession of the $900,000 catamaran they now call home, after striking a deal with French company Outremer.

They used the money they earn from their YouTube advertising – which can go up to $4,000 per clip – and part of the sale of their old boat which was originally purchased, to pay for the boat at a reduced rate.

Their business is backed by crowdfunding platform Patreon, with fans pledging between $1 and $100 a month if they like what they see.

Elayna maintains that her YouTube subscribers aren’t funding a lavish lifestyle – which has seen them skirt destinations including Martinique, St Lucia, Grenada, Dominica, French Polynesia, Cape Verde, Europe and Moreover.

The money pledged by fans is being spent on boat maintenance and new filming gear to continue producing high-quality footage while giving them enough money to get by.

They pull as much food as they can from the waters below them.

Elayna, a former scuba diving instructor, from Geraldton, Western Australia, grew up in or on the water and even learned to sail during her school days.

But when it comes to being the captain of a big ship, neither Riley nor Elayna had experience before going to sea, having to learn the ropes as they go.

The couple, who met on the Greek island of Ios when Riley was sailing alone on La Vagabonde and Elayna was playing music for a travel agency, said they have since enjoyed a lightning ride.
