Director: Tom Gormican.
Written by: Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten
With: Nic Cage, Pedro Pascal, Lily Mo Sheen, Sharon Horgan, Alessandra Mastronardi, Tiffany Haddish, Ike Barinholtz.

THE UNPORTABLE WEIGHT OF A MASSIVE TALENT. We heard about this movie for months before it was available to watch, all the raves, and it was worth the wait. It’s a comedy, action, suspenseful farce, with elements of parody and weird twists throughout. Thoroughly original while paying homage to existing genres, Unbearable Weight is fun, clever, and thoroughly entertaining. Cage plays Nic Cage, an actor who goes through a tough time in his professional and personal life when he decides to retire and accept a million dollars to go to a millionaire’s birthday party. The two get along until a CIA agent recruits him to gather information on the millionaire. Everything goes wrong from there.

Director: Jay Chandrasekhar
Written by: Ken Cheng and Kate Angelo
Starring: Jo Koy, Eugene Cordero, Tia Carrere, Jimmy O’Yang, Lou Diamond Phillips

EASTER SUNDAY. Jo Koy makes his film debut in this fun, traditional family comedy. Joe (played by Jo) is a struggling comedian and actor known for a beer business catchphrase, as well as a divorced single father. He’s up for a major sitcom and struggles with the networks vision for his character. He also struggles to balance work and family life. With this backdrop, he takes his son to his family on Easter Sunday, where the Filipino tropes are strong and everything we already love about Jo’s stand-up translates perfectly to the big screen. Koy is a natural, and the movie is fast-paced and full of laughs.

Director: Jordan Peele
Written by: Jordan Peele
Cast: Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Michael Wincott, Brandon Perea and Keith David

NOPE. Perfectly encapsulating the aesthetics of the genre, Nope is an American neo-Western sci-fi horror comedy. Peele’s third feature proves he’s a true original filmmaker. The film is beautiful, it’s scary, and there’s a strong comedy streak throughout. As a bonus, it has something to say and enough substance for critics to argue about what it is. At a horse ranch in Cali, a man and his sister discover something dangerous in the skies. The rest of the film focuses on the characters’ various reactions and interactions with the entity, and the consequences of their choices. The cast is terrific with great performances especially by Kaluuya and Palmer. If horror isn’t your thing, watch it anyway. Peele did it again.

Director: Dean Fleischer Camp
Written by: Dean Fleischer Camp, Jenny Slate, Nick Paley
With: Jenny Slate, Isabella Rossellini, Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, Lesley Stahl

MARCEL LA COQUILLE WITH SHOES. What started as a series of animated shorts with a cult following in 2010 hit the big screen this year, and rabid fans embraced the feature version wholeheartedly. Marcel the Shell had a simple life with his grandmother and their stuffed animals in a beautiful community of others like them. They now live alone as the only survivors of a mysterious tragedy until a documentary filmmaker discovers them among the clutter of his Airbnb. It changes the world for Marcel and his little family. This is a whole-hearted comedy film. Beautiful, deep and of course funny. Jenny Slate is at her best here.

BROS. It’s the year of Big Gay Comedy! And first on our list is Bros, the first gay comedy from a major studio. Brothers follows two gay men in New York who avoid commitment but are attracted to each other. Bobby is a podcast host who’s content with casual hookups, and Aaron is a lawyer who’s also happy to play the court. Bros is funny and light-hearted – a broad rom-com where the rom-com is between two men – a version of the rom-com that’s been long overdue by the Hollywood studio system. Sweet, dirty and above all funny, Bros should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Director: Alex Lehman
Written by: Robbie Fox, Chris Bremner, Jason Blumenthal
Actors: Kelly Cuoco, Pete Davidson, Deborah S. Craig

DATING CUTE Pete Davidson is clearly the draw of this Peacock Original comedy flick, but it’s actually his female co-stars who breathe life into this sweetly fun spin on the Groundhog’s Day genre. Pete is great, but Kelly Cuoco is at the heart of this charming romantic-comedy sci-fi time travel film, playing Sheila. When the movie opens, it’s just a girl who meets a boy and asks him out on a fun and perfect first date. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. Deborah S. Craig is funny and fabulous as June, the owner of a nail salon who has a tanning bed out back. There’s nothing solemn about Meet Cute – and sometimes it doesn’t even make sense – but it’s fun, and if you’ve got Peacock, it’s well worth the 90.
Meet Cute is streaming on Peacock.

Director: Sean Ander
Written by: Sean Anders, John Morris
With: Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, Octavia Spencer, Sunita Mani, Patrick Page, Tracy Morgan, Loren Woods, Rose Byrne, Judi Dench, Jimmy Fallon

FIERY. Spirited takes the Charles Dickens Classic, A Christmas Carol and the Bill Murray adaptation Scrooged and turns them inside out. Starring Will Ferrell as The Ghost of Christmas Present, we go behind the scenes of Spirit Central, a non-corporeal corporate environment where staff are busy helping redeem a modern-day scrooge every year. They may have met their match when they selected a sunk man to try and turn around, played perfectly by Ryan Reynolds. Tracy Morgan steals the movie in a small role as Ghost of Christmas Future.

Director: Eric Appel
Written by: Al Yankovic, Eric Appel
With: Daniel Radcliffe, Evan Rachel Wood, Rainn Wilson, Thomas Lennon, Quinta Brunson, Will Forte, Jack Black, Scott Aukerman.

WEIRD: THE STORY OF AL YANKOVIC. Our only biopic on our list this year, or possibly any year, is loosely based on the life of comedian and musician, Weird Al Yankovic. That would be enough to earn the film a place in our top ten. This Is Genesis was a fake trailer made for a fake biopic that was released on Funny or Die, which Al loved, and his fans loved so much, that the movie was finally made. And THAT would be enough to earn the film a place in this top ten. But it’s also a funny film with a great performance from the film’s star, Daniel Radcliffe, an incredible walk on the roles. It’s a meta movie, from a meta trailer, based on the career of a comedian whose work is itself a parody and reflection of pop culture. True to its name, everything about this movie is weird.

ISLAND OF FIRE. Our second gay comedy on our list this year, Fire Island, is more independent in style, budget and origin and it’s equally funny and fabulous. We already knew Joel Kim Booster was an up-and-coming stand-up star, and now we can add acting and screenwriting to his list of formidable talents. This modern Pride and Prejudice tale told by a group of gay men vacationing on Fire Island is extremely funny and the characters are irresistible.
Fire Island is now streaming on Hulu.
