Although she still has her doubts, this condition was identified in the mid-1980s by Hiroaki Ota, a Japanese psychiatrist practicing in the French capital.

He posited that some travelers were sent into a tailspin when they arrived in Paris to find it wasn’t the perfect city for the postcards they fell in love with in movies, photos and books.

Ota found that Japanese tourists are more susceptible than others to the syndrome, which in some extreme cases causes new visitors to Paris to break down when their romanticized idea of the City of Light fails to meet their high expectations.

Radical Storage spoke with clinical psychologist Irene S. Levine PhD and producer of MoreTimeToTravel.com about what happens to people when holiday expectations aren’t met.

She said: “Often people plan to escape trouble at home. They don’t realize that when we travel, we take our problems with us. Big problems are hard to get rid of, even on the most beautiful trip. When a person leaves home with a cloud above their head, it doesn’t really lift and impairs their ability to experience and appreciate a destination.

“It can also be the result of over-planning, trying to see or doing too much, which leaves no room for chance travel experiences that bring joy.

“Finally, it can take time to put a trip into perspective. While the virtues of the destination may be overshadowed by some hassle, over time a person can come to enjoy their trip.
