This secret Italian region will pay for your train tickets when you visit

Milano, Venice Where Rome are likely to be stops on a Journey to Italie – and for good reason. The incredible architecture, food scene and the rich culture are not to be missed. But these destinations also come with crowds and long lines. Luckily, there’s a lesser-known corner in northern Italy that has the same charms but remains wonderfully crowd-free – and will even pay for your train tickets if you visit.

Nestled beside Austria and Sloveniathe Friuli Venezia Giulia region is now offering travelers free train fares as well as additional benefits to encourage travelers to explore the region’s wonders – which include the Dolomites mountains, golden coasts and vast vineyards up to as of May 31, 2023.

The local tourist board said it would refund all entrants train journeys to four towns in the region: Trieste, Udine, Grado and Lignano Sabbiadoro. The icing on the cake ? The initiative also includes a free FGVcard valid for 48 hours. This allows travelers free or discounted access to public transport as well as attractions, museums, tours of historic sites, exhibitions like Banksy at Salone deli Incanti (open from November 25 to April 10, 2023) and more.

In the capital of Trieste, a border town carved between Slovenia and Italy, and Udine, with its immaculately restored old town, globetrotters can marvel at Roman relics or even book a wine tasting tour because the region is known to produce some of the finest white European wines. Along the Adriatic Sea, Lignano Sabbiadoro is home to magnificent Italian beaches while Grado is a quiet version of Venice due to the canals that run along the quaint seaside village.
