A clip of two men dragging and stabbing a small shark has circulated widely on social media.

Some people are outraged, while others say the men did absolutely nothing wrong by killing their catch.

Mariana Sabogal was stunned as she returned to her Airbnb after a walk on the beach just before 6.30am on Friday. Two young men from New Smyrna Beach dragged a blacktip shark across the sand after the animal was fished out of the water.

For Sabogal, who took the video viral and many others who reacted negatively to it on social media, it would get worse. One of the men stabbed the shark in the head after telling Sabogal the shark was a legal harvest.

“There are a lot of things that are legal, but they’re not morally right,” she said.

FWC is aware of the video and sent this statement which reads in part: “It is common practice for anglers to euthanize sharks after landing for ethical and safety reasons. This video is not currently under investigation as no violation of state law regarding method of harvesting has occurred. »

Sabogal understands this, but thinks the men were harassing the creature, playing with it as they dragged it alive across the sand, and then making claims it didn’t believe.

On the video, Sabogal asks the man if he likes what he does. He replies no and says he takes it to eat and feed his family.

Some on social media have defended the men and legally they have done nothing wrong, but Sabogal at the very least feels that this was not the right place to catch and kill the shark.

“It’s done on a public beach where there are a lot of people watching what a lot of people around the world consider cruelty,” Sabogal said.
