You will never believe how much the sprawling Crawley family estate would be worth
Downton abbey follows the lives of the Crawley family and their friends at the turn of the 20th century. The series, which takes place in a fictional Yorkshire country house, brings enough drama to keep fans interested. Still, the tuning helps a bit too. The huge estate sits on acres of magnificent property and is too large to comprehend. Can you guess how much the fictional abbey would cost if it was real? The numbers have been crunched.
Where is “Downton Abbey” filmed?
While the period drama is fictional, the estate that serves as the Crawleys’ residence is a real castle. Shots of the abbey are shot at Highclere Castle in Hampshire, England. When Downton abbey is not filmed on the property, it is a working estate and serves as the base for Lady Carnarvon and the Earl of Carnarvon.
The sprawling estate, which includes 1,000 acres of parkland, has been in the same family for over three centuries, and it doesn’t look like it will be changing hands anytime soon. The popularity of Downton abbey allowed fans to take a peek inside the castle, but there are still forbidden rooms. Lady Carnarvon said City Country that the crew were banned from several rooms in the house. She did not share which rooms were verboten.
How much would the estate actually cost?
Although Highclere Castle was never available for sale, anyone who sold the property would be on the verge of making a huge profit. In a detailed study, Money estimated the value of a variety of fictitious properties, and the famous abbey is the most expensive of the bunch. According to the publication, if the Crawleys’ property was real, it would be worth more than $ 179 million. If someone were to mortgage the property, after the standard 10% drop, they would shell out over $ 500,000 per month for 25 years.
While the price tag is woefully steep, a lot would come with the property. There are around 300 rooms inside the massive estate. Those 300 rooms cover 100,000 square feet of space, and that doesn’t say anything for the outdoor property. The castle covers 1000 hectares.
While the average person will never own such a property, Airbnb has proposed Downton Abbey fans the chance to stay overnight. In November 2019, Lady Carnarvon and The Earl opened their home to the lucky Airbnb winners. The one night event allowed a set number of guests to spend the night inside the chateau and have a drink and dinner with the owners.
‘Downton Abbey’ fans will soon have more drama to discuss
While the series may be over, film crews are already back at Highclere Castle to give fans more of their favorite aristocrats as soon as possible. A second feature film has been announced, and it already has a release date. Carnival Films plans to release the film in theaters only on March 18, 2022.
Carnival Films originally planned a December 2021 release of Downton Abbey: a new era. Production began in April 2021, but restrictions related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) slowed filming. While the film’s storyline is being kept under wraps, it looks like fans will be hearing the wedding bells.
