One of the first things I did when I moved to Vancouver over a year ago was hop on BC Ferries and head to one of the small towns, on a small island in British Columbia

It has become my way to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and relax. Luckily, there are BC Ferries vacations and trips that are super fast, making them the perfect plan for long weekends.

Some of my favorite trips were to small islands like Bowen, where I could explore all day and be home in under an hour.

Sailing across the ocean might not seem like a winter activity, but the views are stunning year-round, even if it’s chilly. Plus, it’s the perfect adventure to get out in the cold months.

Here are the best trips I’ve taken since arriving here on BC Ferries.

Bowen Island

This adorable little town is a quick 20 minutes from Vancouver. You dock right in town, so you can walk around and explore all the oceanfront restaurants and shops right away.

It’s the perfect winter trip, as the town is very small, which means there are fewer long walks outside.

Tofino

Tofino is a huge surfing destination, but winter brings storm viewing. The small town on Vancouver Island is however a trek from Vancouver. You have to take a ferry to get to the island and then drive a few hours before reaching it.

It is really worth it. The community is so friendly, and there’s endless activities to keep you busy there.

Victoria

Small towns are great and all, but Victoria made me fall in love with city life all over again. It’s a quaint town on Vancouver Island, and during the ferry ride, we spotted whales!

There are amazing restaurants, cool vintage shops and a great vibe there.

Juan de Fuca Provincial Park

It’s a great place for anyone who loves the outdoors. We took the ferry to the island and drove along the coast to get there.

If you like scenic drives this is a must.

We camped overnight, but there are plenty of great Airbnbs and stays in the area.

Gibson

Anyone visiting British Columbia should take at least one trip to the Sunshine Coast. Fortunately, the ferry can take you there. I loved visiting the shops at Gibsons and driving to the nearby community of Sechelt.

You get all the ocean and mountain views on this trip!
