Airbnb addresses complaints of hidden fees and changes prices

Airbnb said it would clarify prices on the site for its rental properties after customers complained about hidden fees.

The new price display will include the full cost of the properties including all cleaning costs. Airbnb said in a report that the changes will begin next month and will show property search results based on full prices for the stay and not just the purchase price per night.

CEO Brain Chesky said on Monday Twitter“I heard you loud and clear, you feel like pricing isn’t transparent.”

“We started as an affordable alternative to hotels, and affordability is especially important today,” Chesky said.

“During these difficult economic times, we need to help our hosts provide you with great value,” he said.

The company also said it would be addressing the issue of chores.

Some Airbnb users say some hosts charge extra fees if a host-assigned to-do list isn’t completed at the end of a stay.

The company says it will provide further guidance to hosts on which requests are appropriate and which are not.

The company calls these “payment tasks,” and Chesky said he finds customers view them as a “pain.”

“You should not have to perform unreasonable payment tasks, like stripping beds, laundry or vacuuming,” he said.

Chesky said, “But we think it’s reasonable to turn off the lights, throw food in the trash, and lock the doors, like you would when leaving your own home.”
