An impressive new railway route between Krakow, Warsaw and Lithuania

In the past, if you wanted to catch a train between major cities Poland and Lithuania, everything was a bit complicated. Although a railway has been running between Białystok in Poland and Kaunas in Lithuania for several years, there was no direct train from Warsaw and Krakow to Lithuania.

So far it is. A new route has been started, where you can see Krakow and Warsaw connected with Kaunas and Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. In other words, travel through the north Europe by train is now easier than ever!

The new route leaves Krakow at 4:01 a.m. and arrives in Vilnius at 5:34 p.m., stopping in Warsaw (7:35 a.m.) and Kaunas (4:26 p.m.). The train has integrated ticketing, but it is not one long direct route. Passengers will still have to change trains in Mockava, only on the Lithuanian side.

Even better, the new route is actually quite affordable. Tickets for the full 12-and-a-half-hour journey from Krakow to Vilnius start at just 142 zlotys (£26, $32). It is operated by the Polish long-distance railway provider PKP intercity and you can order tickets here.

Of course, as any Euro Rail enthusiast will no doubt already know, the new Krakow-Vilnius line is just a tipping point to the wonderful Rail Baltica the project was finally completed by the end of the decade. Rail Baltica high-speed trains will run from Poland all the way to Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and, possibly, even Finland. Exciting times for fans of Baltic railways!
